Howdy from North Texas all. I purchased my `78 CJ5 about a year and a half ago, and love it. It isn't the prettiest thing on earth, but man is she fun to drive. My 6 year old son and I live for the nice weather days to run around in "Sarge" (if you have little kids who love Pixar movies, you will get the name reference). I will make sure to post photos down the road.

On to the pressing issue. I noticed a few weeks ago that the fuel pump was leaking. Ran to my local auto parts shop and bought what they said was the replacement. Unfortunately, the inlet and outlet towers on the new unit are about 3/4 of an inch taller on the new one. This makes it impossible to install due to the power steering pump bracket. Has anyone else run into this?

I checked with Carter, one of the major manufacturers, and their build spec actually matches my original pump. However, every one I order is too large. I have done a ton of research, but to no avail.

I have posted links to images of what I found online. Interestingly enough, both images are for the same part number on the same site, but look closely ... they are different.

Similar to mine:

What actually comes out of the box:

If anyone can lend any advice here, please let me know. It is much appreciated.

I look forward to spending a lot of my time on this site, as I bought the CJ to be a long term project and a learning experience for both my son and I.

Thanks,

I swapped out the fuel pump on the AMC 360 in my truck. The outside of the engine, including the brackets, are all the same as the AMC 304 . I didn't have any problems. I think I might have gotten the pump at NAPA but I can't be 100% sure.

If all else fails, you can swap in an electric pump and use a fuel pump block off plate for a big block Chevy. Every parts store usually stocks an electric fuel pump you can use with a carburetor. Just make sure it's in the neighborhood of 4-5 PSI.

My pump has the same numbers as you show in link #2. Inlet tower is very close to the bracket but fits. Good luck

Just remember if you install an electric pump you need to add an accident/roll over switch in case of a crash. The manual pump is a tight fit under the power steering pump bracket no matter what.

Thanks to all! I am still working on this. I tried another pump, and still can't get it to fit. I have a guy at the local Jeep house helping me out, and I will post the results.
