I have a 1976 CJ5 that I just use on my property for plowing and log hauling. I repaired the tank but did not hook up the check valve canister or hoses. Are they needed? I'm not getting a steady flow of gas to the hose filter, even after hooking up an electric fuel pump.

what did you repair?

I cleaned out the tank and repaired a leak and put everything back except the check valve canister and hoses.

so the fuel pick up screen in the tank has been removed and cleaned ??
If your not picking up fuel it could be a dirty screen of a broken hose from the tank to the fuel pump.

Sounds like you did not hook up the gas tank breathing system, this is to help with the fuel pumping to the carb. The liquid check valve stops raw gas from flowing into the cannister that provides breathing in the tank at steep angles or a rollover. An external electric fuel pump installation is kinda tricky to get it right and will not perform well at low fuel level in the tank. You only need about 4 p.s.i. of fuel pressure and a manual pump will work just fine.

If it's like my '81, it's a closed system and won't work without the hoses hooked to the canister. There may be a work around but that canister also is a safety feature in case of rollovers. I would hook it back up. Like I said though, it may be different on my '81.

My 83 has the canister removed (so no hoses) and the gas still flows fine.
sounds like the problem may be with the pick-up or maybe a leaking fuel hose sucking air.

Did you block the hoses that originally went to the canaster from the tank?
Thanks.

Yes I pluged them.
I had a mech. pump with a carb, but now have an electric pump with my EFI. No problems with either.

I've been thinking thats probably what I should do. I have an electric fuel pump hooked up just after the tank and also the mechanical fuel pump. Is that OK. I figure I just need the electric to start up and then I switch off the electric. Thanks,

I would only run one or the other, I don't believe the mech. pump will be able to pull fuel through the elect. pump if it's not running.
You could feed the mech pump with the elect. pump but it shouldn't be necessary.
