I was wondering if anyone else in this forum has had issues with a dirty fuel tank pick up filter. My filter was replaced about 15 years ago so it is not oem and I think it recently caused an issue while in a trail run. I had mentioned how I got my rig home in a thread that CJ started in the Sand,Dirt, and Mud section titled MacGyver tricks.
An option would be just not to have one since there is another filter downstream anyway.
 
I'm getting ready to replace my sending unit, fuel lines, and filler tubes. I'm replacing my sending unit \ pickup with an OEM replacement. I've been contemplating adding an in tank fuel filter. Are you using a different sender \ pickup in your tank? If not, what \ how did you install a filter. My thought is this needs to just be a screen type filter for length of service. I'm also looking at using a frame mounted filter in combination with the pre-carburetor filter. Rod
 
Before removing the pick-up filter, verify that it won't effect fuel pick-up tube length.
Some of these filters can be 4" long; this effects the tube length.
This means you can run out of gas before you really are due to the 4" loss of tube length.

If it's the type that lies flat on the bottom of the tank, then disregard my comments.
 
I will be installing a fuel filter/pickup/sending unit made by Crown or Omix-Ada. I did cut open the fuel pickup filter and it is a double thick heavy duty mesh that appears to be blocked by whatever gets past the filters at the gas pump. The filter design does appear pretty good for what it does in my opinion. Looking at the wear marks on it, it was resting at the bottom of the tank. A while back I was able to put in 12 gals in my 15 gal tank at the gas station which means it was in a good position. I also plan to install a door in the bed of the CJ to access it for future replacement and gas gauge adjustment. Another problem I found was that the fuel venting system was blocked somehow which does have an effect on pumping fuel. When I had a mechanical pump, I installed one of those see thru filters just prior to the pump, this way I could see what :dung: was in there including water. On my electric pump there is an additional fuel filter to protect it from whatever :dung: gets beyond the pickup sock.
 
I just installed a new sending unit in my tank, and the pick up tube was at a 45 degree angle. I installed the filter which only went on about half way. I actually had to bend the tube slightly to get it to sit properly. I'm sure it is leaving about 1 to 2 inches on the bottom, but if there is any :dung: on the bottom I think I'm better off with the filter. I didn't know they made one that laid flat on the bottom. I didn't bend it enough to really notice, so I think it would of been off the bottom 1 to 1 1/2 inches without the filter. My old one didn't have a pick up filter.
 
I have decided to use a sending unit filter, to keep out the larger items. On the send unit that I have the filter slips on only about a 1/2" or so. Not sure who makes it, but I got it at my local 4WPW, and am picking up another one today. I guess it is just one of those items that need to be eventually replaced.
