I have a oil gauge that needs replacing. How good are the repop's? Wanting to keep the oem looks. Are the two nuts on the back all that keep it in place. I think I can feel two connection and a wire that runs into the gauge. I think it is orange. Can this wire be cut and spliced.

I used Auto Meter gauges they look much like the stock units, are available in many locations and aren't hugely expensive.

On the stock units thee are two bolts, can't remember the size ... 3/8 or 7/16 ... you should be able to remove the nuts and bracket without removing the wires. then pull the gauge out the front and look closely (with pictures and notes) at the configuration .... the gauge wire should be purple.

First thing to do is disconnect the battery-:D
Also, make sure your not have'n and gnd issues with the dash or the sender(like using Teflon tape on the threads).
99% of a Jeep CJ's electric issues are bad gnds.

Good point on the dash ground, probably one of the only body part I agree on most grounding issues. You can take two routes here, run a special ground wire or pull out your volt meter and check the ground resistance. But to be honest, I don't believe ground at the meter makes a darned bit of difference at the meter except for running the light. If you have an electronic meter it is essentially a volt meter run through the resister in the oil pressure sending unit. If your meter works at all or has some type of grounding issue it's at the sending unit not the meter itself. Same thing with the gas gauge it's really just a volt meter with the resister in the gas tank.

I will check for the dash ground everything else seems to go on and off. A new light switch will need to be put in it is just wore out. I have a new fuel sender coming should be here any time. Easy enough to change oil sender unit. The oil gets pegged at 60-80 at idle.

I checked the wires on the oil gauge there is a purple red and orange. The orange looks like it goes into the oil gauge and not a disconnect like the others.

Orange = light
Red = 12v hot
Purple = Sending Unit

All can be checked with a volt / ohm meter. If this is not possible, then replacing the sending unit would be a good idea. Rod

Thanks peanut butter. I could not find the orange wire on my wire blue print thanks.

Driver after fumbling with my wiring for quit a while the logic of the system becomes more obvious, for instance, Orange is always a dash light wire, Red is a hot wire coming off the ignition switch. Then there is an assortment of special wires and colors. Surprisingly enough the colors are fairly consistent for at least the '70's and 80's.

Actually I thought the red with white trace came off the ignition switch and plain red was +12v from battery. Some have traces some don't, but they are all red ..... hmmmm .... maybe the direct power wire from the battery is the solid red one and the others have a trace line. But switched power is always some combination of mostly red. Once it hits a component the color will change unless its wired in parallel.

Thanks men I guess some of the jeep appeal is always learning and becoming self sufficient. I will be changing out as soon as I get the sender changed out first. Thanks for the wire info that will help me out huge.:notworthy:
