Having some gauge issues in the cj and wanted to get some ideas. My speedo and temp gauge works, fuel doesn't register at all. My volts gauge works. I have an 85(psi?) oil pressure guage that just kinda registers at twenty every now and then, sometimes not at all. Kinda twitches a little. All of the lights in every guage and the interior lights come on no problem. My question is with all the lights working and 3 out of five guages seemingly working would this probably mean that the two non-functioning guages just need replaced? Would a bad ground just affect two gauges and not the lights or anything else? Would you believe that oil pressure reading to be correct? I did read the guage doc. Just wanted to see if there are any tell-tale signs of common issues. Thanks in advance.:dunno:

The fuel gauge problem could easily be the sending unit rather than the gauge itself. In fact I would be willing to bet lunch on it. if you short the gauge it should go to full. Do yourself a favor and go with mechanical on the oil pressure gauge.

I ordered the sending unit for the fuel tank, a new voltage regulator, and sending unit and oil pressure guage. Hope I can get it lined out. Do they make mechanical oil pressure guages that are stock replacements?

No, not from the factory anyway.
I like the Autometer brand, I run the pro comp with the large 25/8" face because it's easier from my old eye's to see.;)

If this doesn't work I will go to a mechanical for sure. I'm trying to keep all the guages stock, but I like to know my oil pressure and if this doesn't fix it or last long I will replace it with an aftermarket mech pressure gauge fore sure. :chug:

Good Luck with that, mine near gave me a heart attack a few times.
I would start her up & ever thing was fine, then I looked back "0" zero oil pressure.
The later on I turned the key she'd fire right up, but "0" zero oil pressure.
I rapped my knuckles on the gauge then the oil pressure shot up to 80 psi.
after that I bought a mechanical gauge.

Another point of view

I had a plastic line break and shot oil all over. Not cool 10 miles in the woods.

Never had a good electronic Gage fail or shoot oil all over.

Electronic for me!

Use a copper line. ;)

Have you priced copper lately?

Then someone would steal it for sure! :D

I don't know much about the sending units on these old Jeeps yet, but, It's been my experience with about every other brand I've had that's had issues, 9 times out of 10 it's a grounding issue AT the sending unit. Rust and corrosion are the debil...

I plan on cleaning and checking the grounds for sure. My fuel sending unit has shipped, but other parts will probably go out today. Will get it all done some time next week.

This may sound praniod but I have a hood latch lock on my 86cj7. And when I"m in a really bad part of town I take the coil wire off. You might have a dead battery from so idiot trying to steal your jeep. But it will still be there. Most Jokers that will stup so low to steal copper OR batterys and what not arn't smart enough to know you need the coil wire for it to run. Just my 2cents.:D
