My CJ7 starts but won't stay running. I have recently put in new battery, alternator, fuel filter, oil filter, and I even changed out the positive red wire for a new one. I was driving and it slowly lost power and shut off. I only drove like 2 blocks in my neighborhood. It has an oil leak coming from Transfer Case I think I can drive it for a short while if I constantly hold down the accelerator. Also when I put it into gear it shuts off so basically it won't run much if I'm not giving it gas. Needless to say I'm in way over my head and I'm feeling pretty defeated seeing as how my jeep is not currently at my residence but a couple blocks away. Also if I let it sit for a little while I can start it again. not sure if anyone has had this issue ever but I need a win here. Thanks in advance for everyone who tries to help.

How long have you owned the Jeep? (I see you have 5 posts)
If awhile has it been running good up til now?
When was the last time the carb was rebuild?
Does the fuel gauge work?
If so does it have fuel, is it fresh?

Sounds like its starving for fuel, could be a weak fuel pump, pluged filter, stuck float, hole in fuel line someware. You see where I'm going with this?

Im wondering about the fuel too? The ethanol gas that 98% of the local stations round here will set up like mucus. At that point a rebuild of the carb is going to need to be done. Its better to buy 100% gas. Sounds like maybe carb is flooding in a way but definitely out of proper tune. Someone else with the knowledge will chime in soon , but unless you can limp it back to your home I would be grabbing a chain or strap. Leaking from the tc or tranny for that matter shouldnt keep it from running. Good luck

I would first suspect the fuel pump like Mtnwhlr suggested, either check the carb to see if it ran out of gas, check the pressure with a gauge, or check fuel flow by disconnecting the fuel line into the carb and putting it into a bucket then turning the starter on. Or, you could take a chance and just put on a new fuel pump, that way you will know how old it is. There could be cracks in the fuel line affecting fuel flow.

If you can go buy the cheapest starting fluid that you can find. Go down there and pop the hood take the breather off and fire it up. Let it sit there and idle until tries to die and then shoot a little starting fluid in the carburetor and see if it keeps running. If it continues to run which I assume that it will, this will rule out ignition issues and confirm that you have a fuel issue.

With what you're describing I would be very surprised if it were electrical. But I've been wrong before and it sure could be. This will tell you.

Once you confirm the fuel issue the advice on here that you've been given will help you find the root cause.

The possibilities for fuel issues begin inside the carburetor and stop at the bottom of the gas tank. I'd start under the hood and work my way back unless you find a smoking gun somewhere else.

Thanks for the response everyone. I was able to get the jeep back to my house. It actually started right up and j just held the gas down all the way. It sort of crept along the last little stretch but I got it back either way. I am going to take all the info and run with it. Ill keep everyone posted

Agree, sounds like fuel issue. Do the cheapest and most likely culprit first: Fuel Filter! If you can't remember when it was changed, it needs to be changed... :D

Sounds like fuel for sure.
Along with what everyone else has said, it could also be the sock filter in the tank that is plugged up.

Whatever you do, just don't let it beat you. Walk away for a few minutes if you need to. We've all been there. Keep plugging away. You'll get it.
