OK.......just got the '78 back on the road....engine rebuilt, etc. Still have some issues with the carb (Carter YF)....most likely some adjusting to be done.

My question is: Has anyone checked into whether a Holley 1946 will fit/work?

It's a 1bbl carb used in the early 80s by Ford.

Rebuilt Ford 1BBL 6CYC Holley Model 1946 Carb K | eBay

I'd much rather work on a Holley than pretty much anything else.......

You dont want to swap to a 2bbl intake and a 2 bbl Holley or 2100 motorcraft?

I gave it some thought, trust me. Might yet end up that way, if the H1946 pans out. Got a buddy down in TX who might have one I can try out. Motorcraft is right up there with Holley as far as I'm concerned.......love working on either one.

ya the 2bbl motocraft is super easy to work on. I here the 2 bbl makes more horse power just sayin :D

Being mostly of the "Ford" persuasion, I've had lots of times to work on the 2100.......along with it's 4bbl "big brother". Looking into either the eBay H1946 or getting one from Texas.

Got the Holley 1946 last week, and got it installed today. This carb has never been on an engine until mine. Replaced 4 gaskets, put it on and made one minor adjustment to the idle mixture screw....runs smooth. Fabbed up an adaptor for the stock breather cover.

Gonna drive it to work tonight, wish me luck......

Oh man........for the cost (about $65), the change to the Holley 1946 made all the difference. I used to experience "drain-down" with the old Carter (having to crank and crank due to no fuel in the bowl); now, even after sitting a week, the engine starts up faster than my fuel-injected Ranger. No pumping, nothing.

According to the "spec sheet" that came with the carb kit, the H1946 was used on AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engines in the 70s.......so that would explain why it just dropped right into place. Even the heat-tube from the manifold to the choke-spring housing was pre-bent perfectly.

Life's good.
