I have a 1982 CJ7 , AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , and the clutch pedal hinge is so old that the bushings are breaking up causing the pedal to stick. I’ve seen others in this forum with similar problems, so I’m not alone.

But I can’t seem to remove the pedal from the shaft up under the dash. I loosened the dashboard to get better access underneath, and removed the retainer clip and washer that seems to hold the pedal on the shaft. I expected it to slide off toward the left, but it’s not going anywhere.
Has anyone come across this before?

I may need to just unbolt the entire clutch and brake pedal bracket and remove the unit as a whole. What I don’t know is why the pedal won’t slide off the shaft.

Did you disconnect the clutch rod (manual) or clutch cylinder rod (hydraulic) from the pedal?

Maybe just remove the entire peda assembly. Sounds like the pivot shaft is needing repair/replacing. Sounds like a lot of work, but you possiblly will end up pulling it anyway.

There's always WD40. . .

I am pretty sure there is a nylon bushing at that joint.
Pulling the drivers seat, dash and steering column is not nearly as difficult as it first looks.
If you were an anorexic 15 year old girl with extra elbows at your forearm and bicep and were, of course, double jointed in all 6 of them I could see dropping just the peddle.
If you are not you are more than likely best off to start dismantling things.:D

I have a 78 CJ5 , so I'm pretty sure we are somewhat set up the same. You can't pull the pedal off the shaft, you have to pull the shaft (actually a rod) from the pedal. The brake/clutch pedal is one assembly with a large bolt running through both which is also part of the steering wheel support. Anywho, here's my 20-20 hind-sight. The problem is the cluth assembly, since I already had my fenders off, I'd highly, highly recommend taking off that left fender. You'll see the rod, pull the pin there, and replace the assembly, really not a hard job, just very little working space, and being double jointed with extra elbows would be a plus!

Thanks for the replies.

Mine's a manual linkage and I made sure I disconnected the clutch rod, but from what everyone here says it looks like I'm resigned to removing the entire assembly. Just looking at the pedal's return spring makes me nervous.

I've removed the driver's seat and got the Ben Gay and the heating pad warmed up . . . wish me luck.

The problem there is you get to have the fun of unplugging the wires from the steering column and the pedal bracket actually bolts to the dash as well as the firewall and brake booster or master cylinder. None of it is fun to get to, but that's part of owning an old Jeep.

Good Luck!
