What do you suggest doing to protect wheel wells?

Just paint? Ruberized undercoating? Herculiner? Duplicoler bed liner?

Something else?

i used roofing tar. it was in my garage and i wanted to see if it would work. i did it on my old bronco and it lasted for years and then i sold it. it was messy though

I used that undercoat-:dung: that comes in a spray can...it worked good, but it was an absolute mess to use. Be sure you mask off anything you dont want undercoated...including yourself.

I did cans of spray on rubberized under coating for sound deadening, Now I plan to have them sprayed with rhino lining (rubber undercoat to thin)

I built a 51 Ford truck and used Tractor Supplies red oxide primer sold by the gallon. Its made by Valspar and its good stuff.
I would use a 3m stripper wheel on a die grinder and clean as best I could and get all the dirt and rust off then clean everything with paint thinner and brush on the primer.
You can see exactly what your covering up and seal it good and then go back with a good rattle can spray paint like rustoleum and paint it black.
If you undercoat it someday you will be back in there dealing with scraping the undercoating off.
