All,

I am just trying to get some ideas on how I can do a frame off restoration in my one car garage. With the jeep parked inside, I have about 3-4 feet of working space on the front and rear. I also have about 1.5 feet of working space on the left and right. Keep in mind that I live in a townhome with HOA, so I can't really move parts outside. I've though about lifting off the tub and placing it on its tailgate rear end while I POR15'd the frame. Any ideas/tips you can share?

Thanks

how high of a ceiling do you have
I had a 12 ft ceiling and hung the tub off the beams, just be sure they can handle the weight first so you don't bring down the roof :chug:

I have a 10 - 12 ft ceiling. My problem is that I have 2x4's as beams so I don't think i can hang too much weight from them.

Hows this?

two words. Public and storage.

If I didn't have a 2 car garage, I would have put most everything in a storage building until I needed it.

Down side to the public storage is I work on the Jeep every free min. I have and if it's before diner or after or whatever it's nice to be right there even if it's less than ideal in terms of space.

agreed, but the next logical step is a bigger house preferably in the country.

Well I guess I thought I was working in a space about 1 car size but maybe a bit more, the tub will sit on it's gate and take up min. space but maybe it's still too tight for you?
The way I'm doing my 3B has been ground up and the tub could have been stored along with all the other stuff that takes up space like the seats, windsheild, rollbar, etc. and that would give you room to do chassis/drvetrain. then when you got a solid roller you could trade out the chassis for the tub and work on it as needed.
You will need some good neighbors anyway you look at it cuse theirs gona be metal pounded on, sanded on and painted all along the way.

I have no idea. When I did mine it took over a 3 car pole barn. The bad part is it still takes up 2 stalls now. I really need to get rid of a lot of old stuff.
But I think both Sasquach and IO have the right idea. Stack everything you can, and take the rest to a storage unit untill needed.

Not seeing you garage, 2x4 rafters installed correctly will hold a lot if you catch about 6-8 of them with a 4x4 8-10 long placed on top the rafters. Peak of your roof will determine how long the 4x4 could be. Flatten the windshield and you might have some head room to work.Store it more to the rear of the gargage for more headroom up front in the engine bay.Just trying to really confuse you but its a thought.
I did a 70 Roadrunner in a one car garage that way and worked good. It'll be tight.I also liked
saguash setup
My 2 cents only.
Good Luck
Mike

Could always put the tub in the living room :D:wasted:

Thanks to everyone who replied! I got many great ideas

I say no to the public storage unit..... that's $$ spent each month that could be used on the Jeep. Every project takes longer than you expect. Say you get a place for $50 a month, if you rent it for a year, that's $600 you could have used for the build!

I am doing mine in a 2 car garage but HAVE to keep one side open for parking the DD. So I basically have the space when I work (back the DD out) but have to put it all back up when done for the day.

I also used the "hang from the rafters" method for the body and various other parts.
