A solenoid is a solenoid is a solenoid. It is just a switch that closes a high amperage contact with a low amperage control signal. you just happen to have a GM starter. the solinoid that was on the fender was for a ford starter and you do not need both of them. So, removing the one on the frnder is the right way to go.

You need the large terminal to go to the battery positive and the small terminal to go to a circuit that only supplies voltage when the key is turned to the "start" position. I can not tell you what wire that is specificaly for your wiring harness but I would hope the diagram they sent with the kit would have a starter circuit .:D

I'm running a ax-15 on my project (its actually a yj) but I'm using a ez wire kit. For the starter I'm using a standard jeep (ford) solenoid. The yj uses a relay on the fire wall. The pos from the battery goes from the batt to the relay, another pos cable goes from the batt to the starter.

As I under stand it when the key is turned the circuit is completed and the relay sends power to the smaller stud on the solenoid which engages the starter gear and causes contact between the batter pos and the starter motor spinning it. If you ground the motor and touch a pos lead to the small stud you will see the gear pop out. In theory you only should have to wire the pos cable from the batt to the solenoid and your key/start wire to the small stud to make it all work..

With that said when I tested my starter the jumper cable 18ga I think became very hot after only a few seconds of activating just the solenoid. I'm not sure what your wiring kit wire size is for your solenoid. I'd be worried about blowing a fuse or burning up a thin gauge wire. It's gonna sound ridiculous but I'm going to use a stock cj (ford relay) I'm gonna make a small 10ga jumper to go from the 4ga starter cable to the small stud to pop the gear out. When my cj solenoid is triggered it will (hopefully) do 2 things 1 engage the gear into the flywheel 2 crank the starter motor. Oh the positive cable will him to the big stud closest to the starter motor bypassing the solenoid for high power.

If you wanted to do with out the ford relay I would wire in some other type of relay for the solenoid.

As far as your other wiring goes sorry but with out having pics or detailed listed of what the wires have printed o. Them I can't tell you how it all goes together. You may want to look into a yj stater relay. That's where they had all thier fusible links and power wires coming from to feed the fuse block and other things. Due to the starter solenoid being so low and in the elements I'd look for another ace to make all those power connections at.

Thanks for the info guys. I rewired the engine harness and found some misplaced wires. I also used an alligator clip and put on side to the small post and the other side to the wires in question until I got the solinoid to jump. Now my starter is not attempting to crank, it is just clicking. So now Im going to check grounds and my battery and try again. Thanks again
