Right now, only one '76 CJ5. 304 with a three speed stick. Everything else is pretty much stock 'cept for a 4" suspension lift. Came to me with a back breakin' 4" suspension lift attached to a reverse shackle setup (Reversed the reverse shackle :dung: and now she rides like a Caddy!) Also posess a few 60s & 70s Mustangs and a couple of late 70's F150s 4X4s.
Headed to town last Thursday and about 9 miles down the road she just chugged one time and caught back up and kept going. In the back of my mind I was thinking, "Oh boy, ICM's going out". Figured I'd run it for a while and see.

Went to my brother's place in S.C. over the weekend (better than a 500 mile round trip). Did the same thing a couple of times but never made me sweat 'cause I got another brain box in the bottom of the console to plug in when she totally dies.

Wife intended to drive the CJ to school this morning, so yesterday I went ahead and plugged in the new box so she wouldn't have issues. Guess what? She had more "issues" on her 24 mile round trip than we had since it started doing it. A couple of times it shut down and she had to coast to the side of the road, key it off and re-start it. So far it has re-started with the key every time. I'm fixin' to go out and start looking at grounds, start her up and shake some wires and re-check everything I tinkered with a few weeks ago when I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor button.

Y'all pick your brains and send me other suggestions to look over. Ain't nothing consistent about it. It even cut out one time while it was warming up in the drive way before she left for school.

Could've swore it was going to be the ICM . Oh well, the search begins! The way my luck runs, Lord only knows what it'll be.

Oh yeah, almost forgot; she's getting good gas. The better half was impressed how loud the backfires are coming out of the side pipes when it catches back up!

2nd forgot: I have the DSII with TFI coil ignition that has never given me any problems, up until now.

You did not mention checking the pickup coil in the distributor.

Thankee! I'll add it to the list. Just got back in from checking everything visible under the hood, under the dash, started it up and shook everything shakable. I finally found where one spark plug wire had dropped down and was intermittently touching one of the header pipes on the passenger side. The wire loom covering and some of the outside of the spark plug wire and the sheathing has been scorched pretty good. Figures I'd toast a brand new plug wire.

Re-routed and isolated that wire away from the header and took it for a 15 mile spin. She never cut out on me. We'll see how it goes tomorrow when the better half goes to school. Done got too dark to tinker on it tonight and the shop's too full to get it in there. I'll jump into the pick up coil tomorrow after work. Never would've thought one plug wire grounding out would cause the killing, but who knows? I might have got lucky this time................or not.

Look for 400-800 ohms between the orange and violet wires on the distributor side of the plug for it.
