i have a 79 CJ7 with an 83 CJ7 motor in it. AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . it runs fine and idles fine in park but when i try to shift it into drive or reverse from park it will die on me. any ideas how to fix this? i just did an engine swap with a rebuilt engine. any help would be great thanks guys

Basically while in park, the carb (and therefore engine) should be idling a tad higher than you would want normal idle speed set at.

When you shirt to drive, the engine kicks down to a lower idle.

To test this theory (easy way):

Find you idle adjustment screw (should be right around the throttle linkage to the carb. When you have it idling in park, turn the screw clockwise (tighten it) and the rpms and engine sound should raise. Raise it a couple hundred RPM, then try to shift to drive.

What RPM's are you currently idling at in park? I'm not sure best specs for yours. I try to idle mine around 600 - 750 (i like a low rumbling v-8 sound at idle) but I have a manual Transmission and a AMC 304 v-8 so understand it's different. You might try park idle speed of around 8, and see if it will drop you to a comfortable 600?

Automatic straight 6 guy help me out here...

we need to know what the speed is now.

The '83 CJ with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l six came with the Carter BBD carb. I would suggest getting a repair manual like a Haynes to see how to make the adjustments needed, there might be a dashpot in there that needs adjusting also. There is also the possibility that there could be an aftermarket carb on it like a Weber.
