i got a 76 CJ5 with a AMC 304 in it and its hard to start. im thinking that its the ignition coil. Already checked battery, starter, alt, new plugs, cap, rotor, wires, timeing (5 degrees btdc). When i do get it to start its seems like a very weak start. Any ideas will be appriciated.

My '80 CJ7 AMC 304 was initially hard to start after more than a couple hours from last engine run. It was the return fuel line from the double-outlet fuel filter to the gas tank. Probably the rubber hoses were 'hosed'.

I got a single-outlet fuel filter and the jeep will sit a week, start right up with two gas pedal pumps.

Hope it could be that simple for you.

Are you getting gas?
If you remove the air filter before trying to start your jeep look into the carb and pump the gas. Does gas squirt into the throat of the carb.

I had a problem with my AMC 304 rough to start and while warming up / hesitant and all around not running right. Upon further inspection my carb had a broken linkage to this little part on the top / back of the carb.

(name of part is escaping me!)

See attached pic. i borrowed from the net, doesn't really show well, but just a thought...
