Hi, just solved my brake issue, and have another issue which I would like to get resolved, I took the jeep out yesterday and everything is fine, I got gas and left the gas station and the jeep was running really rough when I accelerated ( idled fine ), got back to the house and turned off the jeep and it just kept running as if I never turned it off, this happens every few months and a new starter solenoid solves the issue for a few months and everything works fine.
I did notice that I do not have a ground wire attached to my alternator, could this be the issue, if I install the ground wire can I connect it directly to the neg. side of battery?

You could have engine run on problems caused by carbon build up on the spark plugs. The build up gets hot and will still fire after the engine is shut off. A spark plug inspection can determine this. The alternator and starter solenoid are poorly grounded by the engine and body, but an additional wire from the battery negative to the solenoid mounting screw to the alternator housing can improve operation. There are additional points on an old rusty CJ that can benefit from an additional ground such as the gas tank sending unit, tailight housing, headlights, starter, distributor, dashboard, and engine head. Also a battery terminal connection is a critical point also, I use copper battery terminals that I got at a boat shop.

I installed new plugs and wires last summer, old plugs had no issues, the jeep is not dieseling, it literally stays running as if I left it in neutral. I have the motorcraft alternator

The first thing is to determine where the coil is getting power from when it continues to run on.
Keep a test light with you, and when it won't turn off check the + side of the coil.
Then check the I terminal on the solenoid (don't pull the wire). Does it have power? Pull the wire off of the I terminal. Does the engine stop? Check the I terminal again without any wire connected. Does it have power? If the the engine continues to run then the I terminal on the solenoid is not the issue.

Your going to have to start a process of elimination once the run on condition occurs.

How do you stop the engine now once it runs on?

I put it in gear and let out the clutch, this has only happened 2 3 times in the last year, if I install a new solenoid I can go months with no issue then the gremlin shows up with no rhyme or reason.

I have read that a diode inline from the alternator to the coil will solve the run on issue, but I would not know which wire to install it on, I have looked at schematics for wiring a delco alt. and my motorcraft is totally different, for one the red batt wire does not go back to the solenoid, mine goes to the ignition switch, I also don't see a ground from the alternator to the neg side of the battery, seems like I need one.

I see that my externally mounted voltage regulator melted a little, getting too hot, why?

I think I want to upgrade my alternator anyone know where I can buy a delco remy 10 or 12si alt. or something similar so I can do away with the voltage regulator?

My motorola alternator is wired this way:

Large gauge red wire goes back to ignition switch.

L shaped plug on back of alt. has two wires
green/white stripe goes to volt regulator.
black wire goes to volt regulator.

One of the posts on the alternator has two gray wires attached,
one of these goes to instrument on dash
the other goes to volt regulator.

also have a yellow wire from "I" terminal on solenoid going to volt regulator.

Two wires on my + side of coil,
orange wire goes to ignition switch.
lime green wire goes to "I" post on solenoid.

I have two spare posts on the alternator can I use one of these for the ground?
