Auto tranny with quadratrac
just put in a new engine today. its connected to the motor mounts and everything is good. looking for some tips on how to align the tranny up to the motor. any tips

There is a tool that aligns the tramsmission with the clutch disc, throwout bearing, and crank bearing. Available at an auto parts store.

find some long bolts that screw into the Transmission bolt holes (on the back of the engine). Make sure they are long enough to go all the way thru the bellhousing holes!
Cut off the heads and screw them into a couple of the upper holes on the engine. Use these to align the Transmission to the engine, then remove them and install the normal mounting bolts.

You did use a clutch alignment tool on the clutch disc, right?

i don't have a clutch. its an automatic. and i'll see if that works.

OOPs! didnt see that! LOL

OK on your Auto Transmission . Make sure the Torque converter is fully seated in the front pump before assembly! Slowly turn it while pushing in slightly. You will feel it click like 3 times as it drops into the ears of the pump...There is a measurement somewhere but I don't know it offhand.
If it isn't fully seated, when you go to start the truck, you will destroy the Transmission and pump and get to pull it all back out and rebuild it.

alright now if its not all the way in will that cause it not to line up right?

no but it should make it harder to get the Transmission pulled up against the engine block. Don't force it, but pull it back out and see what the problem is...

there shouldn't really be a problem thats the thing lol. nothing has changed. the engine is the same engine i had in it before just rebuilt. lol

what I mean is this. If the Torque converter isn't snug on the pump, it will sit out and away from the Transmission . This will make it harder to push the Transmission . against the block to tighten it down. If you force it, you will destroy the front pump on the Transmission .
It doesn't matter that its the same parts, they have to be aligned correctly.
I have bought a few perfectly good cars with fresh rebuilt transmissions that wouldn't go anywhere...

yeah i understand that and i believe the torque converter is good. i'll double check

If the torque converter is in all the way it should be in past the lip of the bellhousing so when the motor and Transmission are bolted up you need to slide the converter forward to mate it to the flexplate.

yes i have it like that but what i'm saying is i can't get the holes to line up right to bolt engine to the tranny.

There should be a alignment dow on both sides of the motor that fits in a hole in the bellhousing to help you get it bolted up.

yes but i just can't get those to line up to bolt it in.

did you leave the Transmission in and just pull the motor so now when putting the motor back in you can't get them to line up? Or is the motor in and you are trying to put the Transmission in?

Then it might be easer for you to take the motor mounts off to give you more room. Then put a floor jack under the front of the Transmission and raise it up and push them togeather. If the motor is turned one way or the other you may need to hook it up differant with the hoist till they line up. After you get a bolt in on both sides then you can remove the floor jack and put the motor mounts on and lower down.

i'll have to do that tomorrow. its kinda dark here lol

I wish you luck :chug:
