Eveything was going good tell I noticed some play on my axle. The ujoint inside the knuckle from the needle bearing to the axle housing has play in it. It moves a bit when you turn the knuckle. Would the to coats of paint on the knuckle be causing this? Not letting the spinle seat back just that little amount?

Being who I am I took it apart and wire wheeleed the paint off and reassembled. The play seemed to be less once I put the lock out and snap ring on thanks for the info gentlemen. I would have thought no play would have been the ticket.

As the others have said, this is normal. Once you put the hub on, the outer axle shaft is held in the correct position. Then if you imagine a strait line through the top ball joint to the bottom ball joint, that line should go through the center of the U-joint. Then everything should work smoothly but not until you have it all assembled.

Did I make a mistake by using anti seize on my spindle nuts?

I prefer Lock-Tite but if I remember right those are self locking nuts.
You should be fine with anti-seize
