I have the opportunity to pick to up a lockright for the AMC20 for $50. Spring and pin kits are pretty cheap on ebay so, I'm thinking about it. I've read they can make it a little squirley on the road. The CJ5 is already a little squirley on the road as a result of the short wheel base.

Has anyone used a lockright type locker in the rear and what where the driving charicteristics on the road?
 
I have a lockright in my AMC20 . Although I have a CJ7 . It has excellent road manners. No binding or jerking. That being said, I don't leadfoot around corners or on wet pavement. I did upgrade to 1 piece shafts. It ratchets all the time though around turns, so if a ratcheting sound bothers you.......Just set it up correctly and keep it sealed and lubed.
 
You really should up-grade to Moser 1 piece axles with that LR.
I run Detroit Lockers ft & re. YES to the squirrely as it drives from the inside wheel in turns.
Keep'n the rear TP the exact same helps with some with the lockers bad habits.

Glad to hear about the good road manners. I don't think the ratcheting will bother me. Seems like a good way to gain traction. How about in the snow?
 
We don't really get snow in Dallas. Just ice and I was too skeert. I imagine it would work well in snow though.
 
That being said I was turning into my driveway this morning and the locker ratcheted and then POP! Scared the bejesus outta me! It was so quite in my neighborhood I'm sure I woke some people up.

IF-I lived in snow country, I would be run'n Power-locks(LSD)front and rear.

I have one in the front and rear - IMO, I would not be driving it around on snow packed roads. You will be making a pretty quick circle once she starts to go.

It takes a little getting used - wet or dry. I would also upgrade to the 1 piece axles at the same time.

I've been running Lockrights in my CJ7 front and rear for years. Yes, they take some getting used to. If you take it easy on it in corners (i.e. accelerating/decelerating), they are hardly noticeable.

Accelerating on a straight road can also cause some odd behavior as the locker engages, something to be aware of.

I run mine in the snow no problem, but I do NOT use 4wd on snow packed or icy roads.....that tends to be a recipe for disaster (I mentioned rudder affect below) With a locker in the rear, and in 2wd, it seems to do well enough on this type of terrain.

Offroad, a front locker combined with a rear locker introduces some interesting scenarios on a sidehill in snow. The jeep will want to crab or drift. Same on a muddy sidehill. This is because rather then a rudder affect like you have with only one tire turning, both tires break traction.

As much as this is spoken against, I will often unlock one hub in this situation just to get into better position. Do NOT make a habit of driving with only one hub locked!! damage can occur.

x2 on upgrading to 1-peice axles.

Overall, as I said, your whole driving style will change and it can be frustrating getting used to the differences. But overall, I would not go back to open diffs. The traction gains offroad far outweigh the subtle driving quirks.
 
Well, I do use it in the snow. A lot of the forest service roads I run on have a side slope to them. I have a trac-loc for the AMC20 . I may go with that in the rear and a lockright in front. I guess the LS can cause the same problem though.

I'm starting my wide track upgrade. The axle I scored came out of a 1984 CJ8 . It came with the LS carrier. I'm thinking new clutch pack, one piece axles and swap in my 3.54 RP.
 
Trac-loc is junk at it's best.
Look real hard at a power-loc LSD.
They work very well.
Hope your not run'n the OEM,(POS)2-piece rear axles.

I've heard it's hard to get a trac-loc to engage on dirt.
Is the Power-loc the same type of LS or is it a cone type clutch.

I am still running the 2 piece shafts on the narrow track that's under the jeep right now. The wide track is getting one piece shafts before it goes in. Maybe 11" brakes if I can find a set of backing plates.

I saw a post on another site that stated Moser advises against using their axles with the power-loc. Are the Moser axles different? Longer splines or something?
 
Have you considered a lunch box locker....? An Aussie, or LOKKA? Low cost, easy to install, and work great. Just a thought....and keep your one piece axles.
