Not sure if this is considered classified or misc, im sure CJ will move me if needed ;) Im looking for a howell setup if anyone has one they are looking to get rid of. im in CA so i need the smog legal with CARB #.

Thanks,

Jake

I'd buy one from Howell, that way they can burn the correct chip for your app.

thanks old dog, i was trying to save some money and was under the impression they can reburn the chips? maybe im incorrect.

Yes they can burn you a new chip.

i just thought id throw it out there in case someone did an engine swap or for some reason, they never used it.... it's a longshot. i havent heard anyone complain.:)

If you happen to come across one, make sure you get the underhood sticker with it. I remember once where Howell would not send a replacement sticker to a second party purchase.

thans torx, i will make sure

I was lead to a random site for a different kit, has anyone heard of this?

AMC Jeep TBI Conversion Kit

They have an Amc kit that looks identical And is under $900.

I only want to do this once and Howell has a great rep but....... $400 savings would be nice

Thanks for everyone's help

Jake

Jake, I think you wanted a Ca. smog legal unit. Howell would probably be your only source.

I'm not positive on this, so don't quote me / rely solely on this... I just felt I'd share a story...

My propane truck needed to be smogged.

I took it to the local smog shop, who informed me they could not do it as there was not a "sticker" now me having no idea what "sticker" i needed and being young and slightly hot headed ;) I :censored: and complained to him that the truck had been that way for 20+ years and I had never, or grandfather before me had never, had any problems with smog.

He stood his ground and told me I needed to go the the "referee"

I took it the the ref, and he passed it flying colors and supplied me with a sticker for future smogs.

To top it off, my smog cost me $8.75 for the cert... That was all.

SO... main point is, if it is all set up correctly, and you go to the ref, they MIGHT pas it and provide an "approved set-up" sticker or whatever it is, and you'll have a discounted smog for a year...

BUT they might tell you it is not california smog legal set-up, and you'll be out the $900.00, and all the work, and have to spring for the howell anyways.

So, keep in mind I know nothing of the sticker still, and even less about smog as to do with FI set-up etc. I do know some things you buy say not legal for sale or use on pollution controlled vehicles in California.

dot all your t's and cross the I's as they say before jumping on the cheaper deal bud...

:chug:

I cannot tell you that the kit with the link will not pass SMOG.
I can tell you that I bought the Howell Kit because it is CARB approved. Here in California it does need to be CARB approved and may have problems with something that isn't.
You will need a Sticker either from the kit or the Referee as far as I have been able to understand it.
PS Howell was great help when I had questions during the installation and that is worth something $$$.

thanks everyone, im going to stick with the howell kit. if anyone has one sitting around for CA let me know :chug:

Just bumping back up, still looking for the Howell ca AMC 304 TBI

Thanks for looking

Jake
