I am looking for info on installing a Mercruiser 470 3.7 180hp four cylinder into a CJ.

I am sure that it has been done.

Thanks in advance.

That's some creative engine swapping! Is that also know as a Cummins BTA?

Hello MrCarts and welcome to our site! :chug:

Are you sure this swap has been done before and "documented"?

There are many CJ swaps that have been done that are 'unique'....

I think that this would be an 'interesting' swap! :)

Interesting, but are there even any adaptor plates made for this swap? It's a unique Mercury Marine aluminum block with one Ford 460 head. All that to be unique and only get about 170 HP. An easier(cheaper) means to that end would be a Mercruiser (Iron Duke) 180 cu in four. About the same power (there IS factory FI) You can buy brand new Goodwrench crates and get all the performance gear you could imagine because they use these in Midget racing.

Unless you're rich, then all bets are off, like Jay Leno and his wonderful eclectic collection.

That being said, it'd be fun to play with.

I am looking for a high torque lite weight four cylinder engine.

The 470 weighs in at about 250 lbs with the 460 aluminum head.

I am going to offset grind the crank and use chevy rods to get 4.0 stroke with a set of 4.60 bore pistons it will displace 267 ci.

I am just looking to build a CJ5 , that is something different.
