ok so im eyeing a 77 CJ7 with a GM Turbo 400 . thing is it has a bad motor and i have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l sittin in my ranch 76 levis CJ7 with a manual tranny(which i have no idea what it is).

If you havent guessed what im gonna ask, here goes...will a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l bolt directly to a GM Turbo 400 ? Moreover what additional parts/work will i need to do for it to "drop" in?

TIA

:chug:

hey 76 CJ7 ,,,

I believe you will not much difficulty doing this.
The TH 400 should bolt up directly to your AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
The flexplate should also bolt up to your crankshaft, but I think there might be an issue using a V8 flexplate with your AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I could be wrong, but I believe you need one for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ....

Motor mounts will need to be changed though.

I believe fuel lines run down the pass side using a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l but along the drivers side with a V8. A little re-routing is necessary.

Your post is kinda vague of which Jeep CJ7 your are keeping.

If you're putting the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in the CJ with the GM Turbo 400 , then all the shift linkage is already there, with the correct column.

If going the other way, you'll need all the linkage, and the column from the auto jeep to put in your current stick jeep. It will be much easier to take the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and put it in the jeep currently set up with the GM Turbo 400

Good luck, sounds like a fun project..

sorry, im keeping both but the rach CJ is the donor and the other is a city slicker! ima rebuild the V8 and pt it in the ranch CJ later

Good...
If I read it right, you're putting the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in the CJ with the GM Turbo 400 ..

That sounds like the much easier conversion to me...

Flexplate, and fuel lines sound like the major issues to me.

I dont think you'll have any electrical issues either. At least none come to mind. And if the V8 CJ radiator is good, it will surely keep the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l cool !
