Hi,
I have a 73 that the previous owner rewired because of a fire behind the dash. It has working headlights and brake lights, but there is no turn signals or turn signal switch. The guy i bought it from said it did not need blinkers to be street legal, but i dont think that is true. Any suggestions
would be great, i have no clue when it comes to auto electric

do you have parking lights/marker lights??

is there a hole where the switch should be? The PO might have just taken the part that sticks out off if the wires were bad. that way he wouldn't forget and turn them on.

I dont think you have to have signals, if the vehicle didn't come with them, but you would need to know the hand signals. Sounds like he just didn't want to deal with the rewiring headache.

A 73 came with signals so you need to get a set in there to be legal
Hand signals are legal but few people today know what you are signalling or would recognize them in use
I suggest, if you are electrically challenged, to get a professional to set some up.

Do you have a service manual with a wiring diagram??
does the fuse block still have a flasher on it??

Here's what I have for a diagram.According to this it should have them.As mentioned before a pic of the steering column would be helpfull

Universal Turn Signal Switches & Components 947348 by the Jeep Specialists | Morris 4x4 Center

I would think it would require something like this, although Morris says this was only used up to 71.

rewired because of a fire or fire because of a rewire??

I used these turn signals on mine they come in two types both sold at your local auto store. Bulb type or LED, I got the LED ones and they are bright!
They are wired to the turn signals in the grill and tail lights also, or you can just use them as markers. Consult your states requirements first.
