I bought a Cj hood on CL which was painted with a bad salmon pink paint job. When I removed this layer I found five or six spots where rust had eaten through the anterior part of the hood. Each spot varies on size from 2 to 5 mm.
I'm not sure what to do with these. I have wire wheeled these spots down to where the rust is gone, but the surrounding metal is still discolored. Should I put rust stopper paint and por15 on it, then bondo over it? Weld some fill into the defect? Or cut out the discolored area weld in a replacement and try to fix that with filler (at my skill level this may be the least cosmetically feasible). Or should I take it to a pro?
 
Personally I would cut out the spot in the shape of a square and weld in a new patch. I can't tell where this is at on the hood, but if you can access the backside, take a piece of copper (smash some pipe flat) and use it behind the hole / patch as a backer and your weld won't blow thru as easily. Then grind down the weld, prime, putty, and paint. If you have some POR already I'd use that prior to the primer. Dust the POR before it dries unless you have some self etching primer. POR is not cheap so don't buy it just for that little area.

Can you summarize "dust the POR15"? I have urethane primer and Por15 that I was going to use for the interior of the tub.

Thank you.... I took your advice and I will post pictures... I'm not sure how it turned out cosmetically, but I do have a repair that is structurally sound with the rust gone.
The rust was on the bull nose/anterior part of the hood, where the hood latch goes. I attempted to grind the rust out, but it was obvious that it was making the hole bigger and there was more rust on the inside. I cut the piece where the hood latch is attached and bent it back and the rust was much worse on the underside... I wire wheeled it out and went to the next section, bent it back and so forth.
It was a great suggestion to use the copper. I bought a piece of 3/4 inch copper elbow ($1.50 at Lowes)...split it open and hammered it flat... then used it to back the areas I was going to fill. I think with some bondo the finish product will be great... I will keep you posted with pics when the paint job is done.
 
Thanks for the words of encouragement.... here is what it looks like when it was all welded back.... the one thing I am concerned with is when I bent the hood latch back and welded it, it is not in the same exact position as it was before and I'm not sure if that will affect how the hood sits on the vehicle... we shall see. at any rate is was a great learning experience. I got the rust out, coated it with por15, and welded it back.
 
That looks good. Sorry I missed your earlier post. what I meant by dusting it was, POR, once dried is some hard stuff. You need some self etching primer to grab hold of it then. But if you spray a light coat of a topcoat or primer over it before it dries (finger drag dry), then it will have something for the next coat or putty to grab hold of days or weeks later. The POR instructions should explain this.
