I need to order the gaskets for my engine today before they close and don't have access to the engine to verify the correct year. It is a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine

I am attaching pictures, alls i need to knopw is this a 71 to 80 engine, or a 81 to 90 engine? That is the separation in gaskets. . .

I know the valve covers are quite different so please let me know if you know, or how yours is and what year.

I believe one valve cover is completely rectangle and mine is real wavy where the gasket is. . .

Appears to be later model with emission control.

Sure looks like a 4.0. . .

Dont' think they put serpentine belts on until 86.

I will say it isn't the 71 to 80.

based on the intake its a 81-90 it has the carter bbd with stepper motor on it thats a 2bbl intake. i don't think its a 4.0 but it does look like somebody put the serpentine system on it although didn't later model cali. emissions have serp. setups?

looks to be a mid 80s

Its a Frankinstein  it has a carb on it and a 4.0 valve cover and a serpintein belt?

could be a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a 4.0 head swap and serp setup with the factory AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l intake and carb. altough i don't know why you would put the carter back on after doing all of that work with a 4.0 head swap. i don't know get the numbers of of the head and the block to find out for sure

These are all of the numbers on the block and head:

Block Numbers:

JDFW
323

EF3235444
AY

OL20

4

Head Numbers:

Nh1 88 L18 3661f

E- AMC 232 i6 1 bbl (70-79) Now that doesn't make any sense.

My 73 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l valve cover has 2 bolts on the intake side and 3 on the exhaust side. 1 on each end too.

Pretty sure it's a 4.0 valve cover and head. It looks just like my 4.0 with a ton of bolts.

Doesn't look like the early style motor mounts either.

these numbers do nothing for me, are these the block numbers on the pass side just under the block between the 2nd and 3rd spark plug??

Yes these are, specifically this one EF3235444 I believe is supposed to identify the block.

Theser numbers: Nh1 88 L18 3661f are all under the valve cover on the head.

I believe I found the exact numbers you were talking ( IOPort) about between the 2nd and 3rd spark plug. I did not get all of them because they arn't punched in very good. This is what it looks like it says, hopefully you can help me with this:

Based on your picture, the carb, serp belt, metal cover, and motor mounts tell me its from a 87 to 90 YJ. From the date code you posted, if the "O" s are place holders, it would be a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l "C" made Feb 12th 1989.

You have 7 figures, a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l would have 6 so I am saying its after 1986 and a 4.0. I have not been able to find the key to the engine code.

Well isn't this confusing. . . At this point I don't know what to do. Does anyone know how to look up the number just for the head to at least know one section at this point? The number on the head is Nh1 88 L18 3661f

Otherwise are there any other ways to know for sure? I need to figure this out and your two answers conflict. I would love for it to be a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a 4.0 head but I really just need to know to continue my project.

Thank you very much for your help so far, it is definitely appreciated.

Well according to the sites you posted it would seem to be a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l as the pics look identical to my engine, why on earth would someone put a 4.0 cover on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l though? Maybe to get rid of the plastic original?

1987 was a crazy year at AMC. Chrysler bought them. I've heard stories from a friend that worked in Kenosha that said they using up inventory and did some funny things.

If you click on the photos, it will take you to 4WD
