1978 CJ 7 Base, 304 CI, T-150, Dana 20 Transfer Dana 30 Front, and AMC 20 Rear all at 3.73 ALL STOCK!
I have been reading this forum for quite a while so I registered, and have taken into consideration the advice and consensus. I wish to remove the factory AMC rear 20 axle and housing of my 1978 CJ7 Base 3spd AMC 304 w class IV tow pkg. geared at 3.73 and, replace it with a Dana 44 . I wish to keep the Dana 20 Transfer Case , and Dana 30 Front that have the disc brakes. I have finally found a T18A 4 spd. Transmission to enhance the low range and to replace the Tremec AMC 150 3 spd; I plan to install all changes at one time period. I have ordered and received other performance enhancements as recommended, ie; HEI distributor, Edelbrock, the 470, springs, shocks, pitman arm, etc. My question to get my dream straight in my mind: what Dana 44 and housing will swap right in to my 1978 CJ7 with Dana 20 transfer, (disc or drum) narrow chassis 51.5"? What complete axles and housing assemblies are sold NEW....not re-built or remanufactured, but NEW!. I live down south in Ecuador, high up in the Andes Mountains and this country will only allow brand new parts to be brought into the country and, might I add with a very healthy customs fees (the same price as the part). Where can I find the narrow chassis direct swap in complete axle assembly as new? Another thing, As per one of the calculations on raising the tire size from original 28.4" dia. to 33" dia. on 15 x 8's, I need 4.27 gears installed in the front and rear diffs. ARBs will be purchased for front and rear when I can get the Dana 44 complete for the rear and when 4.27 for the Dana 30 and Dana 44 is appropriated. Thank You ! and please advise!

First off, welcome. It is always great to hear form fellow jeepers who are not in the United States.

For starters, I wouldn’t put a Dana 60 rear end as Jimbos76CJ link shows into a CJ; it is just plain overkill for most situations. Dana isn’t building the 44 to the CJ specs anymore to the best of my knowledge but there are a few companies in the USA that build custom Dana 44 rear ends that should pass muster at your customs station. The main one that comes to mind is Currie Enterprises. Most likely you will need to either call them or at least trade a few emails to work out the details.

As far as direct bolt in swaps, the 1972 to 1975 CJs came stock with a Dana 44 that will work, the other is a 1972 & 1973 Commando Jeepster; both 44s came with 30 spline axle shaft. Good Luck!

Sorry.. Didn't mean to seeming I was pushing a Dana 60 at him. I actually meant to post the page that had several different axles. I didn't really look at the link for what I posted other then it is a new cj width and bolt pattern axle. I was just trying to get him a little info ASAP.

Thank you Saddle Tramp and Jimbos76CJ; I appreciate you for taking your time to provide useful information. I have put it to use already having sent out requests to possible providers.
