I just installed a new clutch in my CJ5 that has the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l liter with the T-14 3 speed Transmission . I made sure it was all aligned using a old Transmission shaft and everything seemed to go together well. Since it was out I also replaced all the linckage from the clutch pedel to the clutch fork. Once I got it all back together I tried adjusting the linckage to give the pedal the proper amount of play and make sure things would run smoothly but I cannot get it to engage. The thing won't shift into any gear. When I try all I get is grinding. I have adjusted to the extreams both out, in and everywhere in between but nothing.

I am going to take the tranny off tomorow to check what I may have done wrong. Any suggestions on what to look for (is there a common item that is forgotten or overlooked by first timers?) since my skill level is Limited at best.

Thanks again, this site always come through...

The clutch pedal needs to be adjusted to with in 1/2" of releasing the pressure plate, this may seem like your riding the throw out bearing, however this is how those mechanical adjusted are. Below is a link that might help you out as well.

Best of luck on your adjustment mate.

Don't remove the tranny yet. Make sure your shift linkage is in correctly and doing it's job.
Crawl under your jeep and move the clutch fork as far as you can by hand. This should be all free play because you can't disengage the clutch by hand. Then have someone press on the clutch pedal to make sure the fork is going further.
Did I mention that you need to use wheel chocks and secure the parking brake?
We want to make sure it's not an external component such as the linkage before we drop the tranny.

Did you loose your ball??:D
the bearing the clutch fork pivots on.

Make sure you put the disc plate in correctly. If you put it in backwards it won't disengage. One side of the disc will say this end towards engine.

All very helpful suggestions. The case is now closed as I ended up taking the entire thing out again and discovered that even after double and triple checking, I put the disc in backwards.

Appreciate all the help. Time to ride once again!

LMAO. Don't sweat it, brother. Even the most seasoned mechanic could have made that mistake.

Sometimes when I have not done a particular job I do some research as a refresher. Many times you can find a video showing the job. I am also doing a clutch job on my CJ5 . I went and looked at the old disk and sure enough, it had "flywheel side" stamped in the metal.
