Hi, my 77 CJ5 wont go into 4L. It takes 4H,2H,N. and thats it. I pull the shifter all the way to the back, and still no 4L. If anyone has had the similar problem or knows anything about it.

Thanks.

Are you sure the case is going into low? Usually you can feel the gears engage as in maybe the case is getting held up just before engaging

Worn linkages.
You have a Dana 20 Transfer Case . The linkages at the TCase should look like this:

I am betting the pins or plates are worn.
To go into 4 WD low those linkages would be pulling on the shift rails. You are simply not pulling the shift rails far enough out.

make sure the shifter isn't hitting the body preventing it from going far enough to engage.

Agree. Due to the engine and Transmission mounts failing on my CJ, there was only about 1/4 inch of room between the valve cover and the firewall/tub on my 1980 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . After removal of the Transmission access plate, I could tell where the shifters had been hitting there. The whole drivetrain had slid back an inch or more best as I could tell!

I have the same problem but with 4 high. I don't think my shift rails are moving to the positions they need to because the shifter linkage is so sloppy. I've seen the twin stick going for around 124-130 $$ I've noticed an ebay seller selling some bushings and such for the Dana 20 if you didn't want to go the twin stick route. I think I eventually will go the twin stick route! :-)
