Hi all, this is my first post. I have lurked, read, and read some more over the past couple of months and have learned a ton! This is a great forum!

I just rebuilt my Carter BBD carb, took my time and followed the manual to a T with all the carb and choke adjustments. I was thrilled when she fired back to life and purred so smooth at idle. I won't BS, I did miss a few vacuum lines on the install, but the loud hissing clued me in! I believe I replaced everything where it was now.

Here is the problem: The engine idles beautifully, put the jeep has no power. It does not hesitate or stumble and the rpms do not fluctuate, but I can't get it to accelerate no matter how much throttle I give. It will rev up in neutral, but not as decisively as before the rebuild.

I did make the mistake of not counting the idle screw turns when I took them out, so installed at three turns out for now. The only other thing is that there were four base gaskets in the kit (two of each kind). On top of the spacer block I used the gasket with the two notches on either side of each of the two large holes, because that particular gasket matched up to the top of the spacer block perfectly. The gasket I removed did not have those notches, but I figured the PO used the wrong one.

Short of starting all over, what should I look for?

on most carbs,1 1/2 turns out is a good place to start with idle mixture screws..then fine tune them with a vacuum gauge..but,that should have nothing to do with the acceleration problem

Throttle cable????

vacuum advance ??

I feel like a fool. Someone please chime in and tell me I am not the only one to have ever done this.

When I took the carb off, I stuffed rags into the intake to prevent any debris from getting in. When I put the carb back on, I forgot to take the rags out!

Amazingly, the engine started and idled well, and luckily the rags did not get sucked in any further.

Well, at least rags are fairly soft so the probablility of damage in minimal. The engine will run hot enough to turn any cloth that might have gotten stuck fairly quickly to ash. It is amazing that the engine ran at all. No, your not the only one to make such a mistake. At least this one was harmless.

Never would've guessed that! I figured the clip let go on the throttle cable. Amazing the thing idled at all.
