noisy lifters and short on power

while driving 86 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l up hill on the street it has lifter or valve spring noise and lack of power when shifting into third gear . Any thoughts on best cure.

Yeah, lots of suggestions, too many to list, how about some history on the motor, your last tune up, how many cylinders is it running on, who's carb is on it, does it have the cat still on it, is the ECM still running the motor. Whats the motors mileage, what the compression, how much blow by ?

From the structure of your question, Id have to ask, have you considered taking it to a competent mechanic ?

Nobody can tell you whats wrong with your jeep over the internet, at least not with a query that is that vague.
