I was wondering if I could do the nutter by pass or a painless wiring harness and change the carter carb out and still pass Arizona emissions?

I have been having trouble with spark. The ignition module replaced* coil replaced* power to the coil but nothing after words. Took a distributor out of another running CJ and still nothing. Hence the reason to by pass the ECM and install the painless wiring kit and change the carb bit worried about emissions

im not terribly familiar with the nutter by pass, but couldnt you wire it up with 2 different circuits? one for the stock ignition, and another for the nutter style? that way you could plug the stock in to pass emissions, then back to the nutter to get the ecm eliminated? with connectors for both, i assume it would be as easy as plug and play after the wiring was done

It's just two wires running from the Ignition Module to the Distributor, what I did was went to the parts store and got some wire loom and just made it look stock no one will ever know.

It sounds like the distributer power source is compromised.
I agree with these guys, run another wire. The original wire has a diode in it.
How about HEI or DUI dist. I would spend money that way before a painless, unless you have a lot more issues going on?
I don't have the emissions part. but I am nutter bypassed with 8mm wires, plugs gapped at 40, timing at 6deg, and a MC2100. And it works very well for me on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

You could have a problem getting enough voltage to the coil. With the ignition key in the on position there should be 6 volts between the ignition coil positive and the ground. Also there could be an issue with the ignition cap & rotor or spark plug wires or spark plugs. If the inside of the cap is dirty there can also be the spark arcing to locations other than those cheap aluminum contacts and causing a miss.
If you do a "Nutter By-pass" that will eliminate the computer connection to the distributor and could affect the results with emmissions testing. If you change out the Carter carb with something like a Motorcraft or Weber That will eliminate the computer connection to the carb that controls fuel mixture. Better go talk to the smog man on that one.
I was able to fudge a bit with the coil voltage and get 9 volts to it by shortening that resistance wire a bit. Another way to get better spark would be to go with the "Team Rush Upgrade" easily found on line. This is changing the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wires. The increased spark will allow you to open up the spark plug gap to .040". Another option for spark which is the best thing to do would be to go to the MSD ignition.

Thanks for the input. I am going to check the volt across the coil to be 6 volts. I might need to go to a HEI distributor. I hate emissions. I would rather go to a 350 and call it good.

That sounds like a good idea as well. Thanks.
