Finally grabbed a filter and some oil to do an oil change today on the CJ7 . She has been leaking a little more than normal as of late, so I figured I would rather stain the driveway with some fresh oil.

I actually had a "professional" change my oil last, so I was amazed to grab the filter and have it barely finger tight. It was covered in oil and I was still able to easily twist it off. I may have found the source of my extra oil. Never again will I waste money on someone else doing what I should be. Lesson learned, again.

I usually tighten them as much as I can with my hand. Be sure to put fresh oil on the gasket before you spin it on.

Filled the filter with oil and put some on the gasket before I spun it on. I tightened by hand, then snagged it up a little with my filter wrench (maybe an eighth of a turn). Time will tell if it was contributing to the leak. Also, changed to Rotella 15-40 and plan to stay with it. No more discount oil changes for the old girl.

Oil filters don't need to be too tight. Tighten them up till the rubber gasket is up agaist the engine and then give it one quarter turn more. No need to tighten it up with a filter wrench. The filter wrench is for removing it.

I didn't tighten it very much, just wanted it more snug than I found it. :) I could probably still get it off with my bare hands if I had to.
