i have an oil leak on my 94 ZJ 4.0 does anyone know if this was a common treat or am i just a lucky one? i looked at a used 97 at a dealership and it had an oil leak too.i havent had a chance to crawl under and look,i cleaned the area with brakekleen it looks to be in the area of the rear main seal.any help will be greatly appreciated thanks all in advance.

I'll preface by saying I have No experience with that particular year/engine, But I've had a few of the old AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engines and every one leaked from the main seal eventually. Not too hard to fix if you can get the pan off.

I know that on the 4.0's a rear seal leak is common. The 4.0's also have a problem with valve cover leaks. If the valve cover is leaking in the back, it could be draining all the way down through the bell housing.

Found the oil leak the oil filter housing is leaking in 3 spots and you can see the oil running out also looks like the rear of the valve cover is leaking too.Thank you to all who replyed:D

fixed the oil leak today, the oil filter adapter oring was hard as hell new oring $1.14 also all the bolts on the valve cover were loose.thanks for the replys :notworthy:

Great! I'm glad it was a simple fix and not an oil pan pull. That small amount of investigative work saved you hours of useless repairs!

im gonna check the valve cover bolts again today i drove it about 75 miles yesterday to see if they loosened up again if they did im gonna have to put locktite on them but the low grade stuff lol.
