I changed my oil and went with Rotella 15W40 and a Bosch oil filter, had been using a NAPA filter, and noticed a substantial increase in the oil pressure. Where it was idling at 15 psi it is now at 30 psi. Should I be concerned about this? I also had an oil leak at the pump gasket, one of the bolts was loose, so I snugged them up. Would this cause that much of an increase in pressure?

Switching to a thicker oil will increase oil pressure a bit, especially with a cold engine. That is quite a bit though, is this reading from a 36 year old gauge?

Is that hot engine oil pressure?
What weight oil and who's filter did you use in the past?
The psi jump is normal.
NEVER trust the OEM jeep oil psi gauge---------

Correct me if I am wrong but I think Rotella is a detergent type oil and may clean up the sludge if you have any in your motor. This might be an issue if you motor is really dirty on the valve train.

All engine oils are detergent.
Rotella is a diesel engine oil with a stronger detergent pack, along with higher ZDDP content than gas engine spec'd oil.

New mechanical oil gauge. I haven't run it but a few miles but wanted to make sure I wasn't going to damage anything. I'll take it for a drive and get the engine hot. My biggest problem is that I live in a small town, so very short trips. 12 blocks to work and 1 mile to farthest store. Its hard to get the engine up to temperature.

I did have a NAPA filter which was larger in diameter than the new Bosch filter and the oil was 10W30.

NAPA(Wix)are very good filters. And all I use.
If the OP got to high-The bypass kicks in. Usually, that's set for 80psi or so.
Those short trips are engine killers, as the condensation inside the engine doesn't get "burn'd" off. You end up with grey look'n oil from the moisture.

:) Most roads don't end at the edge of town, get out there, go to the next town or so for breakfast. There's got to be a way to get your CJ good and hot.

I would absolutely believe that jump. I use Lucas Magnum 15/40 with a quart of stabilizer and I have more than that now.

While all oils are "technically" detergent oils, they are nowhere near equals in that respect. These "diesel" oils have far more detergents in them and CAN plug a filter no matter whose it is depending on the amount of gunk in the engine. The zinc level is a great gain with these oils in "our" engines.

Don't be afraid to run that oil 500 miles and then drain and replace filter to get a good clean starting point for this type of oil.

My 2cts...

Oil pressure when hot is 23 at idle(750 rpm) and 55 at 1600 rpm.

That's great OP to have.
What's the hot OP at 2K rpm?
LG

I got a chance to go for a longer drive last night. After warming up the engine the idle pressure was 18-20 and slightly below 50 at 1600 rpm and about 55 at 2000 rpm, so it has come down some. Maybe it needs some miles on it for the new oil to settle in.

Your fine, unless hot oil pressure at idle goes below 13 psi.

I like the way we all seem to pay closer attention to our CJ's than we might to other vehicles. How many times have we all changed the oil in the car and never paid the slightest bit of attention to things like oil pressure changes? I have noticed that my vehicles get slightly worse mileage after an oil change. After a couple weeks the mileage settles back to average, yes I check mileage with each and every fuel stop.

HH-99% of today's cars use an idiot light for oil psi-I hate that.
LG

yes, of course, but if people cared they would use something else. Point is, few really care.

More of 'out of sight-out of mind'.
Ask where you work, what weight oil is used in their own cars-Bet over 50% has no clue.
