I am in the processes of painting my CJ5 . I sand blasted the chassis and bottom of tub. Plan on coating with por 15 then a rubberized undercoat. Any other suggestion.

Next i want to paint the exterior. I have access to a paint both so that is no problem. I have been disassembling and doing body work and sanding hope to have it ready for paint in a week or two. I need help figuring out what type of paint to use. I am a amateur in the painting field so any info would help. This is not going to be a mint condition restoration, I want something that is cheap durable and looks good. Will try to upload pictures of the project soon.

Okay, you asked. My suggestion, tub bottom, stop at the por 15. If your using the rubberized undercoating for soundproofing go with bedliner on the inside floors. As to painting the exterior, prep is everything. Your gonna have alot of time invested in that, go with the best that you can afford. and stay away from lacquers unless your making a show jeep

a single stage urethane prob best bet
and its easy to spray and lays down nice

Light, bright, solid colors are much easier to apply than metallics and will show flaws much less than dark colors will.As 54cj3b said,a single stage urethane would be best for what you are doing.I would also suggest you stick to a solid white, yellow, red, orange, light blue or light green.Spraying a similar colored sealer on first will also likely improve your results.goodluck:)

Thanks for the suggestions. I sprayed herculiner on the inside of the tub tonight. I think it is going to turn out really nice. Its too late for the advice at stoping with the por 15 i got a little carried away and sprayed the chasis and bottom of tub with por 15 and rubberized undercoating.

What is the main difference between using a single stage urethane and an acrylic enamel. Which is better. Also what type of primer should i use.

I am going to paint it white

Application is the pretty much the same.Acrylic enamels dont require a hardner, but you are still better off using one.Single stage urethanes require a hardener and run a little more money but are much more durable.

You will get much better results with a primer which uses a hardener than the old laquer based primers.I would just get a recommendation from whoever you're buying the paint from.

I used PPG CLV single stage 2 part epoxy on mine and the results were better than I hoped for, fairly easy to spray, very durable and high gloss.
Too bad we aren't closer I have a gallon of the factory white left over because I had no idea how much would be needed and the specific paint was being outlawed in Ca. and if I ran short I would have been in a jamb.
I painted inside, outside, bottom, wheels and roll bar all with 1.5 gal of combined material, 1 gal. of paint mixed with .5 gal. of hardner.

I'm painting the inside of mine with bedliner too. Tried to get the roll bar off today so I could paint under it and those torx bolts were not very fun to deal with! I have 3 left in. Hopefully the PB Blaster will do the trick over night. My question is--if you paint the tops of the wheel wells with bedliner--Do you leave the base of the roll bar it's painted color? Will it look stupid to have the black wheel wells and a colored roll bar base? I need to have the whole thing painted and I can't decide if I want to keep it purple or not. Any input?

I think you should have the rollbar painted it's color and mounted to your linered wells, in my mind there is only the one choice.
Just my 2C's

Thanks- That what I thought but just wanted to double check.

go to your local auto paint store some time when they are not busy. They will set you up with a matching "system" that you can handle and you can afford. I have always found these guys to be a great help.
Invest in a good disposable vapor respirator. back in the day of lacquer it was well known that breathing it was not very good for you but today , some of this latest stuff will flat kill you. for real.
