1982 cj7 with vortec 5.3, sittin on a 4.5" lift and 35's. This thing is nasty strong.
I am the proud owner of a beautiful 82 CJ7 . Has a ls3 (vortec) and a ax15 Transmission . Still has stock axles under it but rear is been converted to Moser 1 peice. Her is my plan. Please help if you can with some advice.
Plan is to put a sm465 Transmission with a np205 tc. Gear vendor makes a OD kit that would turn the 4 speed in to a 6 speed. Not sure on the length of the adapter tho. Chevy 1 tons will go front and rear which will be d60 front and 14 bolt rear. Now sounds good right????? Here is my issue......I don't want to get neck deep and find that my rear drive shafts is now only 3 inches long hahaha. Has anyone done this and how long did your rear drive shafts end up being? If there is any other issues I am over looking in all of this please let me know.
Oh and I am planning on running 39 in tires and keeping the 4.56 gears.

Most folks go to custom DS's for heavier wall and beefier u-joints.
Pretty much, you'll need to put that into the build costs.

That's a lot of tire for 93"
You'll be trimming sheetmetal
Tube front fenders?
Tank or fuel cell?
If your moving the rear axle back you will need a fuel cell for the bed
If your keeping the rear axle in the stock position with 39" tires you will need to limit your uptravel so the tire doesn't hit the tub floor.
Are you planning to shorten the axle tube or keep them stock width?
You'll need new shock mounts
Steering, stock setup won't do with 39" tires (hydro assist)
Cooler for the hydro assist
8 lug rims/backspacing
Cage tied to frame at 6 points
You'll need a beefier skid plate

39" tires .... damn that's a lot of tire!

Sure is-That rear 20 will last about 30 seconds :rolleyes:
Same for the OEM front-:eek:

:)
What is the purpose for the change?

That LS3 is near worth more than the complete Jeep!.......Overdrive with 4.56's and 39's???...........WHY? .....might want to check that gear ratio calculator one more time!
With the 465 tranny and the terrible low gear in that 205 TC @ 1.96.1 with 4.56's in the rear, that gives you a terrible overall crawl ratio of just 58.63.1 in low gear......couple that with the 39" tires and even with the sporty LS3 @ 430HP that will still be a slug off road and not much better on the highway.

:D:D:D:D

With 39" tires I see a front and rear stretch, lots of sheet metal cutting and at least 5:13 gears. Posi and tarry also make good points.
What is this jeep going to be used for?

The Jeep is a daily driver but also loves mud down here in the south. To clarify, I am going full width axles front and rear. I am not afraid of trimming metal but with the factory Chevy running gear already set up for SOA and with the 4.5" lift already on it 39s or 40s should be ok. I would like to stay away from stretching the front but if I had the rear I would be ok. The 465 is almost a full foot shorter than the ax15 in it now. The reason for the OD is self explanitory, 3 speeds versus 6. Why not? Right now I'm just trying to get a length overall with the bellhousing, 465, and 205 tc so I cam compare it to what I have now. I'm worried about rear drive shafts length. The gear vendors OD is about 12 inches long.

Because I'm not educated in the ways of figuring out gear ratios would someone be able to help me out then with a good gear set to look at? Right now I'm 65mph at 2200rpm. I would like to stay as close to it as I can. Thank you guys for all you help. Very appreciated. I am trying to build a kick *** weekend worrier that I can drive to the bog, play all day, and drive home after.

I hate to sound like a killjoy but what your doing doesn't sound right to me.
39" tires and 4.5" life SOA rolling down the highway at 65
Do you realize your door opening will be 3'9" high?
Do you plan on carrying a step ladder? I'm 6'2" and it would be difficult for me climb in using a grab bar.
Keep this rig offroad if you plan to use that much lift
Even offroad it's not safe at your present WB
You have to think about others on the road.

Yes right now it is a daily driver but it may not stay that way. We all know how projects go and most of all with jeeps. Once we get started, we just keep going. So no joy has been killed posi so no worries there. I want to start getting things to get her tho. But I don't want to buy and source all this stuff and waste all that time and cash. So I go back to previous question, does anyone know how long a 465 tranny is with a 205 Transfer Case ? With bell housing.

Around 30"
465 = 12"
205 = 12.5"
Bell = Just over 6"
