ok so i bought my1st jeep the other day.
its an 86 CJ7 with an AMC 360 in it.
i love the jeep alot.
but im having some problems with it. its alittle slow to start but when it starts it idles decently alittle rough though. but when i give it gas it starts to sputter out and eventually dies if i dont let off the fuel and return it to idle.
any thoughts of what it may be. ive tried searching and cant really find much and dont really know anything about jeeps or carb'd engines. thank you in advance for the help

Hello thepatester and :ww: to our site. :chug:

So, since you decided to ignore my request to fill out your profile info (you read the post), what carb and what ignition do you have?

thank you for welcoming me. im not sure what carb and ignition. i guess its whatever the stock carb on the AMC 360 is and have no idea about the ignition. (i did put that in my profile info. i accidently forgot to save the changes i will do it now though sorry about that.)

Is your carb the factory 2 barrel? If so it is a MC2100. And, I will have to bow out of this conversation as I have no experience with this carb, but we have many members who do!

They will jump in to this post soon... :) :chug:

Sure its a 360?? Im pretty sure they only came with the AMC 304 's.. either way you will either be in for a quick fix or a long haul..

Start with your vacuum lines, follow then all from place to palce to make sure they are plugged in and not cracked. if they even look alittle dry and cracked replace them. When you replace them do one at a time.

Look around and make sure there is no open vacuum lines or Nipples (yes I said nipples).

If your lines are good check your plug wires and plugs and fuel filter. If those are all good pull your fuel line off at the filter and tank and blow some low pressure air through the line to see if there are any blockages in the line.

Check the carb for leaking fuel.

Remove the distributor cap, disconect the vacuum advance line from the carb and apply some vacuum to the hose end. the perferrred method is with a vacuum tester, if you dont have one use the mouth.. tastes like :dung: but will work. you should see the arm of the vacuum advance move in when under vacuum and out when its released. if you cant get a vacuum on it your advance is bad.

Double check the firing order is correct.

Have a return line from the fuel filter? Charcoal canister?

Give the carb, intake, and vacuum lines a good spraying of starter fluid while its running to check for vacuum leaks. if theres a leak it will pull starting fluid into the intake and cause your rpms to increase. just becareful around your plug wires, altenator and exhaust manifolds.

You can also run it at night in a dark area.. the darker the better to see if there are any spark plug wires that are grounding and shorting out.

Borrow/rent/buy a timing light and see where its set.
Do some general house keeping and look for loose or damaged wires in your engine compartment.

that should get you started. If your wires, rotor and cap look good its up to you if you want to change them. I had a CJ that to the eye the cap looked good but there was a fine crack that would allow dampness in in the morning and cause it to run like poop. dry mornings it ran great, humid morning.. ick.

this is under the assumption that the carb is good and set right.

Thats the Cheap stuff.. vacuum lines and started fluid are not to pricey. if that all checks outthen you need to start looking into fuel pressure, pump, tank sock and the such. check One thing at a time.

I would look for a vacuum leak too; with a CJ it is just a good thought to hold. The leak could also be coming from the base of the carb, not just the lines. In the old days we use to spray a little carb cleaner or other flammable liquids around the carb and intake manifold to see if the rpm would pick up to find a potential leak but that comes with the risk of fire and a few other not so good things so the practice sort of died out so we didn’t. My other question, is this just a problem when starting before engine warm up? If so check the choke tube from the manifold to the carb and see if it’s there. A carb rebuild may be in the future but it’s cheap and easy.

To check the size of your engine use a mirror and look under the motor mount, the displacement size is cast into the side of the block. The AMC 360 came with both 2 & 4 barrel carbs. If it has a 4 barrel you never will get it adjust quite right so dump it in favor of a Truck Avenger or the like.

Welcome. You have come to the best place for help. Alot of the guys on this site have taught me more than i ever could have imagined. Start easy. How is the choke set? Does the engine kill happen after it has warmed up? When you first start the jeep take off the air filter and look at the choke plate. Is it open or closed? Should be closed to start and will open as the engine warms. If that isnt the problem, find out the type of carb you have. Post a pic and someone will help you identify it. Get a carb rebuild kit that will cost $30. It will help you ensure the carb seals are good, float is set correctly and carb is clean. Make sure to soak it if it is dirty. Check the vacume lines after that. If you inspect them and see any signs of cracking, then replace them. Lines are cheap at your auto part store. If you still have problems then start looking for ar leaks as mentioned above with starter fluid. Be careful and keep a fire exstinguisher close if you are unfamiliar around a engine. Check your plugs for build up or age too. Good luck. Pictures are helpful to everyone. As Cj said, vehicle information on your profile is helpful to everyone too.

Jeep only offered a AMC 304 so a 360 is a conversion. Need more info to figure out what parts are in rhere
