1983 CJ7, I6, Dana 300.
i have a 1983 CJ7 with an AMC20 rear and superior one piece axles. my original thought was that because of the one piece axles i wouldn't be able to have a locker in the rear. is there any truth to that or can i do a locker?

You must have a one piece axle if you want to get a locker in an AMC20 rear end. The OEM two piece axle is a weak link even with an open diff.
If you have superior one piece axles you will do fine.
 
Not sure of your plans and it's not cheap, but if you can, try and do both front and rear at the same time. You put a lot of strain on the rear when it is locked and the front isn't.

If you are looking for cheap auto auto lockers check out Spartan on ebay. Or if you are looking for e, cable or air you might want to get some opinions based on what you are trying to accomplish and the good and bad of each.
 
If you have plans to regear do it when you do the locker as the rear will be apart already.
What kind of locker are you thinking about?
 
idk what kind yet wanted to find out more about them first. it's an 83 CJ7 and i don't know what all would come with the territory as far as what else i would need for an air locker or an electronic locker or what?

i'm pretty knowledgeable about the basics and how thing come apart and go back together but the small details i'm a little foggy on.
any suggestions on something that wouldn't be to terribly technical?
 
Without a doubt a selectable locker is best but it is also the most expensive and more involved to install.
A selectable locker such as OX or ARB can be turned off or on by the driver.
Keep it off on the street.
Turn it on when you are off-road and worried about getting stuck.

Lunch box lockers are the cheapest and easiest to install. Problem is you re-use the differential carrier. A carrier made for an open diff is not meant to handle the forces of a locker. That carrier becomes the weakest link.

And where do the air lockers get the air supply from? onboard compressor?

There is basicaly 2 types, auto lockers which lock anytime you give it power but unlock when you let of the gas such as going around a corner.
Then there is the selectables which are engaged by either air, cable or electric. They are nice because you can turn them off and have an open rear when needed, such as winter driving.
There is a pretty big price difference though. I don't know how much you want to invest in a Dana 30 or AMC20 .

If you are going to replace the carier get a Detroit Locker (unless you are willing to spend the extra money for a selectable locker)

A lunch box locker just goes into the existing carrier. You remove spider and axle gears out of the diff and put in the lunch box locker. Very quick and easy to do.

The Detroit Locker entails replacing the carier and setting up the ring and pinion. Not recommended for a novice.

Yes, ARB will sell you a small on-board compressor.
Some get a bigger compressor to also fill up tires quickly.

The OX locker is another selectable locker. It has a small shift lever that pulls a cable to lock the diff.
 
Of course now I can't find the exact webpage but I thought I read the Lokka is locked all the time and only unlocks when going around a corner. Gearing and other factors are important but generally rated to about 400HP. Does this sound about right?

Almost all lockers are like that.
