I ran out of gas while warming my jeep up in the morning, I put a gallon in from the back and let it continue warming up then I drove to the gas station and put in 5 more gallons and left for work.
As soon as I hit 55-60 it started to sputter so I pulled it over and it shut down. started right back up but only made it up to 35 and sputtered and shut down, pulled over same thing but only up to 15 miles an hour then it sputtered and died and wouldnt start back up.
Gas in the carb gets you a rumble for a moment but nothing else.
Nice blue spark from all plugs, HEI electronic ignition.
when I hold down the choke plate and work the throttle I can watch gas squirting into the carb, working a few pumps and trying to start the car results in a quick rumble with no start.
I had extra parts so I replaced the fuel pump and plugs and wires.
I am at a loss, I have a good spark, a new air filter, gas is getting to the carb.
what should I look at next?

An hei ignition does have an ignition control module which can cause a problem, that would be one possibility. So how old is that icm anyway.

When you say hei do you mean gm hei? If so the module is under the cap. The ignition controll you see not hooked to anything is probably the old duraspark box. Gm hei modules can go bad. Although still providing a good visual spark it's not happening at the right time or possibly not strong enough and being quenched by compression.

I think when you ran out of gas you sucked some :dung: out of the bottem of the tank and now you aren't getting enough pressure for it to run.

there seems to be plenty of gas getting into the carb, if I sucked something up my inline filter would have caught it and so I changed the filter as well.
when I put gas in the carb it starts for like 2 seconds, then goes out no matter how much or how little gas I give it. So thats why I have swung back around to the ignition side of things.

How can I test my ignition, i tested each individual plug and Im getting great spark from each plug.
Should I replace the starter solenoid and the voltage regulator thing next to it?

Never during any of my trial and error has it backfired, no smoke or smog, nothing that would make me think timing.

well I have read the YF carb, which I have, is prone to idle jet clogging which sounds about right so Im gonna move onto trying to rebuild the carb I guess.

Not trying to be a smart guy here but I remember a rule about engines running. You need
1. fuel and air
2.spark
3 compression

didn't notice any mention of compression check.
probably something simple.Good luck mike:)
