I am probably going to need to replace my rear main seal and oil pan gasket. I don't think that I am going to have the time to do it myself, new baby in the house (3 months old). Anyone have an idea of a fair price to pay for having this work done? Thanks

I had a shop that I know the owner and have done stuff for tell me he would charge me $500 to do the rear main on my Cherokee. So I was thinking I was getting a deal. So I would say probley 5-800 is the going price. For that much $ i'm going to do it my self.

The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is not that difficult, you don't have to drop tranny or anything. I would think $200-300?.

It's just pulling the oil pan, replacing the seal and putting the pan back up.

To replace the rear main seal on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l there is a bar that goes under the oil pan. It braces the two sides of the frame. This has to be removed.
Next the passenger motor mount needs to be removed to get the oil pan off.
Remove the oil pan.

Loosen all the bearing caps. This will relieve tension on the top of the rear main seal.
Remove the rear main bearing cap. This is the only bearing cap you should remove. Just loosen the others.

The seal is two pieces. The bottom piece is in the main bearing cap. It's easily removed. The top piece is above the crank shaft. Push one end of the seal in until you can grasp the other end with pliers. Lubricate the new seal with soap to install the top seal.
To tighten up the bearing caps start with the caps in the center of the engine and work your way out.

.....not that I'm any kind of expert but I think that before applying Permatex make certain that there is no soap residue that will inhibit bonding of the Permatex on the sides of the lower seal or chamfered edges of the main cap.
