1984 Cj-7, rebuilt 258i, Carb-Motorcraft 2150, TFI ignition, T-176, Dana 300, dana 30 in front, Rear Dana 44, 4in lift, 33in tires, 4:10 gears
Okay there seems to be so many options and i need help narrowing it down and would just love to hear some opinions from the others.

I need to replace the Transmission !! My T-5 blew out
I want to stick with my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /??/Dana 300

I will still be using it as my daily driver too and from work. The thing is i still want to take it out into the desert, go on trails, mudd a little bit, cause it hardly rains here, and be able to do some decent rock krawling.

I have a Dana 44 in the rear/ Dana 30 in the front with 4.10s on 33" Tires. Maybe one day ill move up to 35's but for now i am content with where i am at.

Ill probably be using it on road 80% of the time with 20% off-road

Any Ideas and Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh and i Have about 2k to play with, so nothing to expensive :)

I would recomend a T-176 , you should be able to find one from a CJ fairly easy and reasonable. Pretty easy swap, bolt to a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and a Dana 300 with no adapter. And a pretty good Transmission as well.:D

I have to agree, the best, cheapest, and easiest swap is do the T-176 . It was an OEM option so all parts can be had and installed with no whacking or hacking or adaptors required; just a little work hunting down the parts on Craig’s List and the bone yards. (But hey, the search is half the fun.) The whole thing should cost you less than $1K, half that if you get lucky. Try to get the bell housing from the donor jeep that supplies the tranny.

Just how much will a T-176 hold up to? Hp wise?

Have you looked at swapping in a YJ AX15? As far as direct swap with exception of setting up the hydraulic clutch it will bolt right up. depending on the year and input diameter that you pick up you may need a pilot bearing change. My first one I swapped was internal slave and the input snout was the smaller diameter so it was a direct swap to the back of the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (it was a Yj so the clutch line was already set up) My next one I swapped had the bigger diameter input and I picked up a new pilot bearing from advance adapters for $16 shipped.

They are pretty easy to find, a Dana 300 will bolt directly up to it but should be clocked up a few degrees for clearance. you can find clocking rings for less then $100

The AX-15 I have in my Yj now I paid $AMC 150 for and another $500 in parts and labor to rebuild.

Keep in mind that the T-176 is a 4 speed 1;1 final drive Transmission The ax-15 has a .79 over drive will help with gas milage and wear and tear on the street since the motor will be able to cruise at 21% slower speeds. The OD in you T-5 is .86.. so it will be better then what you are getting now.

There is my .02

If you want OD get an AX15. If you don't use 5th gear, get a T-176 . I never use the OD on my T-5 so I will swap in a T-176 when my T-5 croaks.

You need bellhousing, Transmission , adapter to tcase (which is almost ALWAYS included when you find a used T-176 ), driveshafts, new tunnel cover, and new shifter boots. I've seen T-176 's from free to $500, they usually come with the adapters, bellhousing as often included too (if not, they're pretty cheap) and driveshafts are usually $40-50 each used. Tunnel cover and boots are cheap too.

Unless you do a lot of 70mph+ driving I'd go T-176 . My OD in my T-5 never helped with my gas mileage. I have a Jeep equipped with T-5 and one with T-176 . MPG are pretty much equal for both.

to say the phrase "gas milage " and "Jeep cj" in the same breath just does not work.:D
