I think you want the cage connected to the frame not the body. just my 2 cents,

If you feel that your pushing your Jeep to its limits and have had that "tippy" feeling you NEED a rollcage thats frame mounted in my opinion. I had a roll cage in my CJ5 where the front pads were frame mounted. I never rolled it but it actually stabilized my Jeep a few times in off camber situations. I also flopped it on its side once , but of course it was no help.:D

Ive only been "off road" with my CJ7 2Xs and I missed the security that cage gave me even on the relatively mild (ok really mild :o) trail I was on. Basically once you have a descent frame mounted roll cage your never wanna go back.

In a perfect world the roll bar would be mounted to the frame. the main loop isn't and the dash is as strong as the fenders. I am thinking along the same lines you are for additional bars but 85% is to make it easier to hoist myself into the seat and I am leaning toward the clamp in bars. i have looked at them and am impressed with what I have seen. And then again it mite be fun to weld the bars and go with the windshield mount with plate drops to the floor. and still I don't know if I would do a frame mount. OK so I'm no help, but I can hardly wait to hear what you decide. I realy don't think there is a wrong answer on this one.

does Rock hard do a CJ5 kit now??

On a side not I was going to put up a thread on where the heck youve been. :) Im geographically challenged when it comes to where the cities are in the state of Texas and hope all is well. ;) I'll post the thread now.

Sorry for the hijack.

I agree with respect to the frame mounting.
I do not plan on cutting up my body to to do this and I will be leaving the rear bar as is witch is not frame mounted, I was hoping to "add" some protection in a more stock form.
My CJ is not an extreem rock crawler and I have no plan on putting it on it's side or roof but If things do go bad the stock "sport bar" is pretty marginal with one loop.

Yes but it's very pricey-$650 unpainted

I do know a guy that rolled his tj down the road with a dash mounted cage, it held up fairly good.
Anything that keeps the windshield out of you face is a good thing. :D

Is there a bolt on cage for the back passenger seats. Have two kids that are back there and want to protect them also. And will these bolt ons work with a hardtop. Thanks :)

i like that extreme cust. fab kit, it looks pretty basic though, which to me is a good thing cause i could add to it and make it look how i want it. anyhow id say go for the dash mount if your comfortable with that amount of protection, seems that it is more of a personal decision based on you, your jeep, and what you use it for. but the bolt on kit looks good.

Thanks for the reply cheap. I think your right with the extreem kit and it's dirt cheap too!
Getting in and out of a 5 takes a bit of a dance and having the bar go to the floor cuts off even more of your footroom so I'm thinking do a mockup with the kit as it comes and if I don't like it I can make mounts to go to he dash.
In terms of safety I really don't see were the floor is gona be stronger than going to the dash/windsheild mount area but either way it's gna be better than relying on the winsheild frame alone.
Am I building a Baja race rig? No
Do I want more protection with a slow speed roll over? Yes.

X2 on that

Have you thought of designing one yourself?

You are pretty much Limited to what has allready been done and at $139 for the extreem kit does'nt make sense to in my case.

After pricing roll cage kits I bought a pipe bender and a 20" stick of 1 3/4 tubing for $130. In fact I'm working on that today.

Better get some more, there is 22' in my front only kit.

I will post a pic later but I emailed the company to tell them how perfectly done their bends are, the front hoop is fairly complex to I might add.:)
