Whenever I crank my 78 AMC 304 cold I get a loud annoying screetch out of the engine. It does the same as I shift into second and third and will keep doing it for about 20 minutes. Once its real warm the screetching almost totally goes away.

FYI, just changed the oil to Royal Purple 10w40, only 2600 miles on a rebuilt engine, and as of now this is the only problem this engine has.

So Im thinking its a belt problem - but what are yall's thoughts?

try spraying water on the belts and see if the screech goes away .
could also be the pilot bushing gone dry.

Thanks man, the water worked (also added a little belt dressing 30 min later). So far so good - Ill drive it again tomorrow and hopefully itll still be good.

Tighten the belts up some ;)

i use a crayon. with the engine running, touch the side of the belt with the crayon. the wax will kill the squeel

If it was your belts making the noise from slipping, the pullies are glaised up. Take the belts off and clean them( the pullies)with laquer thinner. Should give the belts more traction.
