Hey all,

My 79 CJ7 originally came with the swing out tire carrier.
I currently run 32 in BFG's, so there was never a tremendous amount of weight on the original carrier..

However, when I did the body-off back in 1999 / 2000 I took off that carrier and never put it back on. In fact, I got divorced during that time period, and somehow the carrier got "misplaced" during my move. HMMM??

Anyway, I've been running around without a spare tire for a long time now, and wanted to see what options were out there for spare carriers.

Anyone have pics of something homemade or way cool to show? I'd be interested in seeing different options.

I love the dropdown tailgate, and once in a while run with it down if I am carrying something big. But I remember always hating to have to close it so I could swing the spare carrier shut...

any options???

I've seen ones that mount to the roll bar angled down tubes (or somehow in the bed) and swing to one side. The only Jeep I can direct you to is one called Tigger, it's a CJ7 . You may have seen it at various shows. I always thought those carriers were cool looking. I seen it last summer at the All Breeds Jeep show in York, Pa. but I've seen pics of it at other shows. It's orange, themed after whinnie the pooh's tigger with black stripes. Do a search on tigger jeep or search thru the pics of the all breeds show. He posts on jeepforum but I can't think of his user name. It may be "tigger".

Go safari and mount it on the hood!

Just kidding.

There are some decent YJ bumper-bumper mount systems that are excellent, You'll have to drill some new holes, I think. But they are pricey. I've seen a few carriers that were double duty as "stingers" both front and rear.

At one time I had my stock carrier mounted across the rear wheel houses. It wasn't a family wagon so i could get away with it. Plenty of room underneath for tools, gear, etc.

I opted not to do a bumper one because I like the old school tailgate and big Jeep logo showing, also, it saves some weight :D. I looked for options for some time and ended up just using a ratchet strap and strapping it to the tailgate. I run it through the rim and it holds up pretty good after cranking down.

I have thought about mounting to roll bar but it's low on the list as it works well for me. It's a bit of a pain when you need to open tailgate but not too bad. I sleep in the back of my Jeep often when I fish and I just open gate, drop tire down to ground and use as a step to get up to the twin air mattress I sleep on.

I like that setup, may try something similar this summer.

Im with CJ007. I took out the rear seat and dropped a 33 in tire in between the wheelwells in my old 78 CJ5 . I put some eye hooks thru the rear floor to use as tie points and ratchet strapped it down.

I used some flat steel plate from the underside of the Cj to make sure the hooks didnt pull thru the sheetmetal. Its works great if you dont need the rear seat in. When I got home from wheeling Id just loosen it up and put the seat back in. Any gear I needed would just get ratchet strapped or tied down in with it.

Thanks guys.

I just noticed, you can't see but I use my Hi-lift as a spacer between the tire and tail gate so it does not push on the tail gate too much. I used the stop at the top of the jack and moved it to the center and bolted my license plate into the hole in it.

The jack actually looks decent in the light and fits well. Gets rid of that problem too, looking for a place for the jack!

One thing I noticed about the latest generation of tire carriers is that the rim is expected to line up with three studs. The carrier I use has a support that goes through the center hole and then a threaded bar is put through the lug hole and secured with a lug nut.

I am, of course, a grey haired old fat guy and I have been going out of my way to do things the easy way for a long time now. For this reason I don't think lifting a 33" mudder waste high and lining up 7/8"holes with 3/4" studs that I can't see is exactly a fun thing. you know, like pin the tail on the CJ??

You can almost see what I am talking about in these pictures, if anyone asks I will take some better pictures. just can't do it right now.:D

I kind of like the bumper mount swing outs and I don't recall a need to carry things with the tail gate open. I have been known to put a camp stove on the tailgate and even set on it from time to time. When cooking the tire is a good place to set the salt or a beer and when setting it makes a passable arm rest.

thanks for the imput and pics everyone...

keep em coming

Hi this is what i did to the CJ8 scrambler when i needed to add a heavy duty tire carrier for the larger, heavier tire... I built the new bumper out of a 4x6 steel stock tube and then added the carrier. take a look at the photos,,,, the carrier is welded out of reg 2x2 stock hope this gives you some ideas on what can be done for very little cost...

BTW: Nice job boxing the square tubes back in after cutting out the reliefs.

I'm getting some good ideas here.... Keep em coming!

I did the homemade bumper and swingout carrier also.

swing pivot is made out of a trailer spindle and bearings so you can let the grandkids swing on it

bumper is out of 2x4x3/16 tubing, uprights are out of 1.5 x 3/16 I think. If interested you can find it on my build thread or let me know and I can get you the information.

thanks oldguy....prob get hold of you....

If you want to buy one, LOD is the most reasonably priced that will fit without modification. If anyone else knows where to get one cheaper, please let me know since I am in the market for one too.
