My speedo started to chatter and the speed dial stopped working. I replaced the cable. Now the odometer works but the speed does not. I put the drill on the cable and the miles add up but still no speed. Is it common for the cluster to :dung: out? I have not drove it sense the drill test but the cluster seems to be my problem?

It's 34 years old :D

There are a lot of Ford and Chevy Speedo's out there that are far older still going strong, unfortunately that is not the case with Harley Davidsons and CJ's.

Do the repops work? Or is there a better choice?

Repops don't have a very good reputation. The good ones can be calibrated or are GPS driven. These bad boys are expensive ($400-$500), but I definitely want one.

as said the repros don't have a good reputation. another option i have been thinking of looking into is having it rebuilt, i have a local shop that rebuilds speedometers, haven't gotten around to calling them though.

Ok were can the good ones be bought from Hedgehog. What would the name of the rebuilding shop be Hondo? Thanks for any info others may be interested.

the place i know of is palo alto speedometer it is a local shop that i have been told by several people does excellent work. check around there might be one more local to you.

Before you go buy one open yours up for inspection
Their not hard to rebuild I've done a few of the the older style speedos
If your lucky it may be an easy fix
When the old style speedos began to chatter all it needed was a few drops of oil (MM). The back panel of the older speedo has a small hole, couple drops would do it.
If it were me, and it couldn't be repaired, I'd find a stock one at the bone yard and roll the mileage to match the original.
