New to the forum so hello everyone!

Got 52 with a Buick 231 v6 with Holley 4 barrel carb and electric fuel pump. When going up steep hills I. 4 wheel drive, the engine stalls out. After getting the jeep level, it cranks but won't fire. Push starting got it running one day but yesterday it would not. There is fuel getting to the carb and into it. I ended up fully closing the butterfly and it fired briefly once and didn't start. Then I opened the butterfly half way and it fired right up. Get it home and it starts up no problem.

I'm thinking either fuel pressure problem or a bowl/float issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Possible low carb float level. As I recall, the float bowl has brass screws that come out and used for float bowl level inspection. It would be good to check that float bowl fuel level after a stall out to determine better what the problem is. If you have an external mounted fuel pump it can cause problems since the fuel from the tank to the pump is somewhat siphoned to it and a long steep hill can affect the siphoning operation. A manual fuel pump has a better suction capability. There are a few fuel pumps out there that are designed for external operation also. The fuel tank must be vented also.

Could be a float issue, but really, Holley's are poor off road carbs. You and your V6 would be happier off road with a mc2100.

Replace you fuel filter and ck the pump's psi. You want 5-6 psi.
Then ck float level.

Which Holley carb and does it have side hung or the center pivot float bowls? In my experience, there is no way you can make center pivot bowls work off-road. Whistle tubes, baffles, spring loaded needles, and extended vents make no difference with those and setting the float level low doesn't work either. No matter what you do to those, get the nose up high and a bit off camber, they will dump copious amounts of raw gas into the manifold.

The side pivot bowls work reasonably well off-road if you use the spring loaded needles and either extended or connected bowl vents-at which point you essentially have a Holley Truck Avenger carb.
