Hello Jeep Fans

I need to use starter fluid to get my Jeep running and then it runs and starts fine until it sits for >1 day. Any ideas what I need to check or adjust first.

I have a CJ5 1973 AMC 304 V8 rebuilt by PO with 6K miles and a weber 4 barrel carb. It runs great after I get it started.

Thx

Dab, my '80 CJ7 was acting the same way when I first brought it home. The fuel line to carb was draining back to empty, and it took forever for the fuel pump to prime and to refill the in-line filter.

I replaced ALL the rubber lines from fuel tank all the way to carb inlet, and put in a new in-line filter. Now I can sit for a week and expect quick startup. Could be you have some swollen and cracked rubber unions somewhere in your fuel and/or carb return lines, maybe even in the charcoal cannister [Did '73's have one? My cannister no longer lives there, and the engine doesn't miss it].

There are much better ways to do pollution control that the route chosen by AMC/Chrysler, but not any cheaper than I can imagine.

Luck with it.

Yep. Mine was doing this recently when the fuel pump was on its way out. Fuel is running back to the tank because air is getting in the lines somewhere. In my case, it was the fuel pump going bad/ bad diaphram.

:agree: with both of them.

Thanks DHugg

I will try the line and filter recommendation. I don't know where the charcoal canister is, if there is one. Where should I look?

Down where your front left fender meets the firewall.
