Hey guys,

So the 3rd and 4th gear synchros are completely shot on my 4 speed Transmission . They've been like this since I bought the CJ. It hasn't gotten better or worse with time.

Besides the Synchros, everything else about the Transmission is perfect. The clutch is great. It doesn't pop out of gear, or have any other symptoms of a bad Transmission .

I wanted to get a perspective on how big of a job it is to fix the Synchros? Does it mean taking out the entire Transmission ?

Thanks!

Yup, Some guys pull both the Transfer Case and tranny at the same time, a lot depending on the tools and skill you have to work with. If you have never done it before it think it would be a great first project. Just remember where everything goes. The tranny and Transfer Case are heavy, requiring a support of some sort. I just pulled out my Transfer Case due to hard shifting issues and gave it to a tranny guy that I have known for a long time.

Thanks Torxhead! I suspected it would be a fairly big job. Maybe Santa will put a Transmission jack under the Christmas Tree this year? :)

Before taking everything apart, is there a chance using synchromesh as the fluid might help the issue enough to make it workable?

After having done the project both ways I'd definitely recommend pulling the Transfer Case and Transmission separately - it's just a few bolts that aren't to difficult to access. However, I didn't ever have a proper Transmission jack in the equation.

For a tranny jack, I just rent one from a local yard, they currently charge me $4.00 hr. So I take the bolts and other add ons off first.

Yes-total tear down of the tranny is required for synchro-R&R.
DO try the synchro fluid first, and see if it helps.
Also-Make sure you have no more that 1-1 1/4" clutch pedal freeplay.
