1978 CJ7.304, t150,D20 w/teralow- twin stick, dana 30/AMC20. 35 sst's on procomp wheels.
Rebuilt the T-150 Transmission . Everything checked good the the bench, I put top cover on and brought it home. put it on bench temp installed shifter and it only goes in reverse. I can think of some reasons why it wont but should it be able to shift on the bench? everything went smooth. I question the installation of the shift forks but it all went together well.:(

i think somethings up. best i can tell its in neutral but engaged. If im thinking right its got to be in the top cover.

When in "N", can you turn the input shaft without the output turn'n?
When you put it in gear on the bench-You may have to move the input & output shafts a bit to engage.

Was the case in neutral when you removed the cover, and again when you installed it?

You will need to rotate the rear shafe as LG alluded to. A friend had the same issue last week (rebuilt only reverse) I just got back from his place and there was nothing wrong, I just rotated the output shaft a bit and it slid into gear.
Not saying that's your problem, just give the output shaft a slow turn while moving the stick into gear.

Neither will move. Is it possible to put shift forks on wrong? I know theyre in the right position but I question if they are turned the wrong direction. This was a topic at work today , I was instaliing them the "other way" and the guys in the shop said that didnt match the pic..???? I DO know that moving the parts by hand without the top on it everything was fine. Thanks for any input, I'll probably pull the cover sat a.m, I was planning to go to the shop and finish up the case. I really wasnt expecting this, Its gotta be in the cover.By the way it turns out I replaced almost everything.

Ill go try it ... does it take 2 people? Ill be back

No, I used my left hand to shift and my right to move the output shaft. Doesn't take much movement.

Just had a neighbor help hold Transmission , when you turn the output the input turns. tried all positions, everything.. Im not above making mistakes but i really feel everything went together very well.

Maybe i should remove cover, set all neutral and try again.. posi im really not sure everything was in neutal when i installed cover

Posi, you know what , i had to lightly tap the cover fwd about a half hole to line up.. that could have binded it .????

Im not sure it was in neutral when installed. I assume this makes a difference...??? I had to tap the cover a little to make it line up...??

Yes, as I mentioned have the case and cover in neutral. When you slide the cover down it will be half a hole reward then it should slide forward and line up even with holes.

This is a fairly common mistake. No question about it, One of your forks missed its slot on the gears. Pull the top, make sure to set the gears to neutral, set the top to neutral then fuss around stabbing the top on. Stab the top, put in on or two bolts, they don't need to be tight. Try to run the gears, when it's right you will know it, you might need to do it a few times. I had to do this a few times with my T-15 . Once you can run the gears tighten your bolts down, if everything still works put in ALL the bolts and torque them down.

Its done:). That was what the problem was. Honestly, after rebuilding the thing I still wasnt sure what position was what. But its on correctly. Thank you to all who posted to help. I was so over the Transmission rebuild i just wanted to be done. because of work this whole project has dragged on. :chug:
