I pulled the Transmission almost a year ago to replace the clutch components. After I put it all back together, it immediately began to dribble gear oil from the bell housing. I didn't drive it for several months and pulled it back out to take a look. I decided to replace the front bearing holder gasket and the shaft seal. After the Transmission sat in my garage floor for four months I finally found time to put it back in which I finished yesterday evening. I drove to the gas station to fill up and when I got back home the leak was doing exactly the same thing. In looking at this Transmission I can seem to understand where else the oil could be leaking from. I suspect someone has seen this before and could shed some light on the situation. Just to be clear, it's an 85 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-176 and Dana 300 . Thanks friends!

Another popular location for an oil leak to the bell housing would be the rear of the valve cover. you might want to try and trace oil back to this location. Or it could even be a leaky rear main seal. Also verify weather it is engine or gear oil. If it is gear oil, well, you know where to look.

I replaced the oil pan gasket, rear main seal and the valve cover gasket as well. Before I put the Transmission back in, I let the engine run for about 20 minutes to see if the oil was in fact coming from the engine, but didn't have any leaks.

Take your hand and wipe behind the head nearest the firewall, where the valve cover meets.
You could also have a RMS leak.
CK your PCV valve to be sure it's working.

I wiped my hand behind the head closest to the firewall and only got a dose of the old dirt and grime; nothing fresh or wet. I think the thing to do is shoot some pics and video. We're talking about drops of oil every few seconds. Not just a trace every few days.

Then you may have a RMS leak or the tranny shaft still leak'n.
What weight oil do you run?

With that many miles on the engine. You might want to switch to 20W-50.
FWIW: 20W-50 is all I have ever run in mine. I bought mine new in 1985.
