Ask me about my head light upgrade harness!!!
So I have sort of a silly question. Im installing a T-176 Dana 300 combo in a CJ and the PO hd removed all the bolts to clean and paint. Ive got all the through bolt and nuts squared away but there are two bolts at the bottom that go into the case. When I tried getting bolts for these it seems like 3/8-16 are 2 big and 5/16-18 are to small.

any one know what size bolts are supposed to be there? I have the feeling Im going to be removing it and tapping the case.

3/8 are what's in my 83

IIRC(oh-Lord, help us:eek:)I think those are 3/8X24thd(fine thread).

Man I didn't even thing about fine thread.. Im hoping to not to have to pull the Transmission to drill and tap. I need to do it for one mount bolt on the bottom already.. More then that and Ill pull it.

Before you go to all that work, try using a 3/8 fine thread tap to clean up the threads. Even if you have to drill and tap, I would attempt it with everything still mounted up....course....my jeep sits pretty high so there's plenty of room for me to navigate underneath it.

Thanks.. Its out for paint now. Hopefully I can run a tap through it when it gets back.

The 2 common threads for 3/8" dia. bolts are 3/8-16(coarse thread) and 24(fine thread).
My bet-if it's into cast iron(d/300 housing)it may well be the 16 thd.

I tried a 3/8-16 and it wouldn't go. Honestly the condition od the rest of the bolt holes lead me to believe that its stripped. Its at the body shop right now so when it gets back Ill figure it out. Thanks again for the help and info.

Jimbo, you might want to do a visual comparison, like with 3/8-16 and 7/16-14 nuts. The pilot hole size should be around 5/16" for a 3/8-16 thread. A 7/16-14 pilot should be around .368.

Thanks.. Ill check it. Fortunately I was a fastener inspector for Fastenal for a few years for a few of the "big attractions here" my day consisted measuring and certifying nuts , bolts and washers. While it was cool to see all the different types of fasteners it was very monotonous. Certain percentage of each fastener sold got measured for

head thickness
width across flats
width across corners
threaded length
non threaded length
body width
pass a go gauge and fail a no go gauge.

While it sucked it was better then working in the 110 degree warehouse filling orders.

On a side note I was able to show that we had such a large amount of waste fasteners due to corrosion that i was able to sell the GM on adding A/C to the warehouse

Well-There's plenty of 'nutz' on this site that should be check'd, often.
